Current most popular forum software?

Xenforo by far. Which is surprising because I think you can do anything with a free software.

xenoforo,ipb,phpbb3

Agree, phpbb3 is pretty decent and it's free. Could really add anything u wanted

I've been seeing a lot of XenForo sites lately. So definitely XF. Vbulletin is practically exstinct. I have yet to see but ONE forum on Vbulletin.

I would agree. Most of the VB sites I see around are larger sites. When you have a large, established forum, it's such a pain to switch.

I used to use phpbb Slaving away for hours coding in mods Then I realized mybb is WAY better than I thought & Im a happyr admin<br /><br />-- 22 Jan 2013, 02:55 --<br /><br />Sorry for the bad grammar but my browser allows only 127chars max, so I had to cut some/all of the good grammar out. 😛

I think phpBB is the most popular because it is the number 2 search result on Google when you search for Forum software.

Wikipedia is the number 1 result for "forum software" search.

Most forum I been on are phpBB2 and phpBB3, and a few Invision boards.

I don't care what others are using. phpBB may allow for various modifications, but it's such a pain in the butt just to install an already-created one. Seriously it sucks.

MyBB is pretty easy & it's flawless. vBulletin isn't that bad in my opinion - I used it for a while and don't know why everyone is are complaining.

XenForo's cool, but I'm not going to pay for a forum that really isn't that far ahead of free software.

SMF is dead. IPB is cool, but again costs too much.
No lie, I would pay to use MyBB. I wouldn't pay to use phpBB.
Note: This is not because I don't have money. I have a lot of money saved up right now; I can easily afford licenses.

Not anymore it ain't! Didn't you hear? A few years ago VB made national headlines because of a security flaw, which was pure stupidity on their part, and now this whole lawsuit with XF and VB!

The lawsuit between vB and XF is a valid concern. If XF is the product of illegal sharing of trade secrets, copyright infringement etc, then XF should either be shut down or it should be the product of vB.

If you make a new invention and someone makes a copy of that, won't you be pissed? If vB can claim that what is used in XF was either:
A. A copy of what vB had.
B. A copy of what vB had planned (stolen from VB when developers left)
then XF should not exist.

Simply put.

If this is all you know then you need to do some more research. When it comes to coding all developers have a signature way of doing things. That is why there are similarities as the Xf developers used to work at vb. vb and Xf are far, far apart and I only see it as vb being annoyed that they managed to do what they themselves couldn't. There is no way Xf was based on future vb plans...

Tindris, while you poke around and make assumptions that I don't know what I'm talking about, all you have done is say that people have their signature way of doing things.
You go on to say that there is NO WAY XF was based on future vB plans. That is simply unreasonable and you honestly discredit yourself; You suggest an extreme when the reality is that you most likely have no way of knowing whether XF was based on vB or not. Read all the blogs you want, but don't use extremes. You've just lost your debate.

Furthermore, you irk me in your lack of reading. If you read my post you will:
A. Notice that I never claimed it was copied or not.
B. Never mentioned the amount (or lack of) of research I did.
C. I said if vB can claim ___ then XF should not exist. I never said their claim was correct and that XF should not exist as nothing is proven yet.
D. The lawsuit, whatever the outcome, is a valid concern as it gives vB time to produce a new product and it eats funding away from both companies. If that's not a valid concern, then I'm a frying pan and pigs can fly.

Your opinion is valid Tindris, but if that is all you got - I suggest you do some more research.

I would say XenForo is probably the most popular forum software as of right now. It seems to be what the majority of people are moving to as of right now. 🙂

No it is surprising seeing as the XenForo project is basically dead.Last I checked anyways.

I think the current most popular would be IPB or MyBB. Both of which are great and get the job done.

Wait what?? How is SMF dead... It is still being actively worked on, still has updates, and still has a giant community.

SMF 2.1 infact reached public alpha a few months back and is still under heavy development.

I can understand not liking a software, but calling it dead is silly.
