Have you ever been on the dark web? I have been tempted but I’m actually scared at the same time. Are all the myths about it true? Would you go on it yourself?

Eh, it's not the dangerous, mysterious place the media makes it out to be. It's basically the internet, just more difficult to navigate and you have to be mindful of what you're clicking on. Because it does contain illegal content. Some of the more interesting stuff I came across included assassins for hire (lol), drug trade, and weapon trade. There was also gore and lots of taboo porn, but I stayed out of those links cause I didn't want to see that stuff.

When I was messing with it, it was a few years before the Silk Road started getting attention in the media (I think it didn't exist yet). Things have changed since then; I'd imagine it's a little more tame, and I know the FBI has claimed a lot of sites as honey pots. So if you do try it out, be sure to use a VPN!

No, I haven't been on the Dark Web at all(Yet, anyway).

Now the Dark Web has many Myths. The most famous being the Red-Rooms. Now if I can remember, nobody knows of their Existent. So, they remain a mystery for now. Other parts of the Dark Web with things like Drugs, Illegal Pornography, Hitman Services are all true. Some of these Sites are known as "Honeypots". A Honeypot is designed by the Owner of the the Website on the Dark Web(Dark Web-Websites usually end with a .onion Address) and what it does is that it makes the Website look like a real Website. But in reality, whoever visits the Site and does Payments on that Honeypot will have their Data sent over to the Authorities(Police, FBI etc.) and thus' the User who visits the Honeypot will be tracked down.

Now I myself, are interested in what lies beneath the Surface Web and deeper under the Skin of the Deep Web. The Dark Web is filled with Disgusting, Illegal and Explicit Content and Products so it's best that you prepare yourself for what you're about to go through if you ever plan on doing so.

I assumed the browser that you have to use to navigate the dark web acts as a vpn for you anyway?

I think the big most recent things to do with the dark web, were the mystery boxes on YouTube. Now I can’t imagine some if not most are real, but does make you think. Elli, when you went on there, were you just browsing? Is onion a search engine or is everything listed like craigslist? Might be a wimp and just watch some videos on YouTube!

Now before you access the Dark Web, you'll first need to get a Special Browser that is capable of loading .onion Addresses. In this case, I'd suggest Tor(Which I'm pretty sure is the only Browser that is capable of doing things like handling .onion Addresses). Then you'd need to go a bit deeper and find a Directory of Websites(E.g. HiddenWiki). The HiddenWiki will give you a bunch of Addresses(To my Knowledge anyway) that will link you to Sites that have these .onion Addresses.

And just so you know, .onion is not a Search-Engine. It's a Special Domain-Extension for Websites, only via the Dark Web.

And don't use things like Tor for Youtube. And do not use Tor for logging into your Accounts(Email, Services etc.) Tor changes your I.P.Address which makes it harder for you to be tracked down. If you log into an Account then you're making yourself an easy Target(That is, if you don't use Tor for things like going into either the Deep Web or Dark Web and just use it for regular Internet Activities and just want a bit of Privacy to yourself, Online).

I don't want to think about it or even want to know.. And my answer is nope

I'd probably never navigate the dark web, mainly because I'm using Windows and there's too many loops you need to go through in order to protect yourself, and your computer. I've watched a few youtubers navigate the dark web, and I think that's good enough for me. Someordinarygamers is my favorite youtuber who views different websites. Apparently though in one episode, he came across a website that had his old information on it, so whoever was responsible for that probably watched his series and then obtained some information about him and posted it on the dark web. Some stuff on the dark web can be found on the normal web too, he came across a Sonic fan game that was on the dark web and normal web. I honestly don't know why the creator bothered to post it on the dark web, Sega encourages fan made works unlike Nintendo...

I was just browsing, mostly figuring out how to navigate it. Like @Arvid mentioned, the links I browsed were on a Wiki-style page, listed under categories. The URLs were messy and almost impossible to remember, so it seemed this was the most efficient way to share them. Can't remember if there was a search engine or anything.

Also as @Arvid mentioned, the browser is called TOR. But as far as I know, it doesn't have any VPN functionality. So if you were to visit the dark web, you'd want to use that in conjunction with a VPN.

Yes mostly seen some illegal stolen items on sale in one link. I also saw one link that had X rated snuff tapes. I have never been to silk route though.

So do you think these mystery boxes people had on YouTube were/are real?

If you ever see me in a dark room that's probably worse enough. :angelic:
I've never wanted to go to the dark web because I believe when I use my laptop the reason there's a built in web cam is because aliens are watching my every move. So I just behave 😛

Like this? It does seem like a strange collection of items. He could have made it up for views, or maybe he really did order it from the dark web. It seems reckless to inhale/touch everything, though.

I haven't really used it, as I keep hearing that it's filled with child pornography, illegal drugs, hackers and FBI stings on anyone who so much as accidentally clicks onto a shady site lol

It doesn't matter, if you use a VPN.

The FBI knows of several zero days in web browsers. Disabling JavaScript might help tangentially to reduce the attack surface, but please don't go doing illegal things lol

When I was training for a company, I did use the TOR browser for work. The company maintained a database and the purpose of TOR was to keep an archive of this database. I wasn't the administrator, so I can't tell you how the server-side worked. But I recommended MyBB (and funny enough, the IT department took my suggestion). At least the forum side of things seemed relatively normal, though I sometimes needed help with settings related to URLs. Random things would break too. The MyBB installation was done by the administration, and I assume they had some safe fall-back plan.

The only real experience I had outside the company's forum and database were a series of hidden wikis. I had read online that there was a hidden wiki with links to TOR websites. To my surprise, there were several "hidden" wikis accessible by TOR specific search engines. Nevertheless, I never actually visited any of these sites, seeing that some of them sounded like they were related to drugs. There is a lot of evil out there, and I don't want to find out lol.

The TOR web seems to be in use primarily by people in restrictive countries who need a safe way to run or access a website. In that way, it resembles an older version of the web. There are also criminals and drug lords out there.

For those of you who are wondering what the TOR web is like, it's a lot like the normal web if you're from a free country. Except, it's much harder to take down servers and users. I've heard from administrators that this allows illegal activities to flourish, but users are still caught and servers are still taken down. But this isn't much different from the normal web you're browsing now. There are tons of illegal activities going on, crimes being committed, and malicious software being spread, here on the world wide web. In that respect, they're very similar. The major risk of using the dark web is that there are tons of people who want your identity. So, I do not recommend anyone browsing it. I have never installed TOR nor used it outside of training. One wrong step could lead you to a stalker, doxer, or something else.

Once again, that can also happen on the normal web. There are just a lot more malicious users on the dark web, making it more likely. However, given a professional environment, TOR has certainly taught me a thing or two about anonymity. The biggest change for me after using TOR is that I'm much more careful with the normal web.

Last, but not least, I would say most of the "myths" you guys are describing are generally true. Therefore, I would always say stay away. I don't know why anyone would want to visit the TOR web. Unless you're from an oppressive country, you can find all that content and more on the normal web. You can even find the criminals, identity scammers, and viruses if you wish lol.

I suppose it’s curioisty killing the cat Rick. People want to have a browse on there because it’s the unknown and as humans it’s our trait to explore. Even if that’s into a messed up world.

Obviously over the years there have been a number of horror films that take on the dark web because it’s mystery. I just watched a couple of people of YouTube browse the dark web, was happy with that. Felt like I surfed it too. How is it the dark web even exists? That’s the most interesting question!

And about the mystery boxes, those people, well some are good actors. Some you can tell are fake but others I was always like I’m not so sure.

Let's consider the mobile web for a moment. In this context, I'm using the phrase mobile web to refer to mobile applications and websites frequented by mobile users.

A lot of rumors about the dark web have technically come true on the mobile web. Selling creepy packages? Check. Live streaming murder/suicide/torture? Check. Gore/Brutal videos? Check. Illegal activity? Check. Apps being utilized to brainwash? Check.

But a lot of people don't think twice when they're visiting a website or downloading a social app. You might not realize what type of people are behind it.

Edit: And let's not forget there was a major pedo bust at Youtube recently. Children were groomed and exploited using Youtube's platform, and it went unnoticed for years apparently.

Thus, I conclude, if you realize how dangerous the regular internet is, the dark web isn't that surprising.

The thing is that the type of boxes or anything that some weird guy on dark web sends, trust me anyone who gets those gifts would go into trauma. Not try to monetize it through YouTube. Crime and dark web world is traumatic for average person. I mean if I get mystery box with images of some kids locked up in basement and guy or old woman is torturing them with hormone injections, then, I'd not touch the internet for weeks. So if anyone who gets mystery boxes and shows random shopping mall stuff in it, they're just playing around for the YouTube views and monetization.

I'm pretty sure red rooms (or live streaming of torture/death) has been debunked as being a myth. Everything else mentioned in the topic is definitely on the dark web though.
