It depends on the situation. In my situation, I'm an IT student. I'm using a laptop because its portable. I can do my works even in school.

5-year-old laptop. I'm looking to purchase a desktop soon as a semi-replacement.

Budgetwise. Desktop is more affordable than laptop, so I'm planning also to buy a desktop in the future.

Ok now that I have had both I will now comment.

Yes I have upgraded to A desktop

Laptop:

Not good for video editing or gaming as you need A actual graphics for that but laptops are good for casual and normal work and some gaming not too intense.
Edit: Should add in you can conveniently carry A laptop around so it's good when you need A computer But I go my Galaxy S4 so Won't need it to be portable
Desktop:

Can be upgraded which is great and is good for gaming if you upgrade it to work better with games.

Desktops are also built for more intense things.

I have noticed that desktops are cheaper for the price which saves you money and a lot more powerful then A laptop.

Everyone is different and it also depends what you do but A desktop is great for me and I will never look back.

Yeah, the obvious choice is desktop value-wise, but it's almost like comparing apples to oranges.

If you're going to get a laptop, get one with an Intel Core i3 or i5 CPU. You'll be able to do video editing and gaming to a certain extent. Integrated graphics on the Core series processors is better than most people think.

The only other issue with laptops is you can't get a graphics card to extend your gaming like my desktop can now play any games because I upgraded it to.

I prefer a laptop just because it is easier to carry around. A desktop would definitely be more powerful, faster, and much more efficient for editing videos and stuff but I love sitting on the couch with my laptop. I can even bring it to a friend's house.

Laptops are good for convenience.

For what I do which basically is video editing for you tube I would need A desktop so it can handle it better.

Desktop. What if something goes wrong on the laptop? If you wanted to repair a laptop, it would cost much more than a desktop. Desktops are cheaper, and you can plug a ton of peripherals into desktops.

I agree

Laptops won't last while desktops will last a lot longer I just changed my PC case to a gaming one, something you carn't do on A laptop.

I prefer a desktop for things like working on my site. For regular browsing I actually prefer a tablet.

Desktop over laptop, i used to have a custom built rig with crazy good specs spent loads on the thing, till i blew it out (leaving it on in a dusty room without the coolers working and i fried everything inside) so i now have my laptop which is far lower in specs and cant run anything right :/

Desktop all the way

Desktop all the way now that ive tried both.

Plus desktops are good for gaming, unless you are working in a business you don't need a laptop when you got a smartphone anyway.

I prefer a Desktop as well since it is not very expensive to upgrade a video card to play a game like League of Legends, Dota 2, and Minecraft where an older video card like the Nvidia GTX 650 which cost $100 or less on eBay can play many newer games on medium to high settings.

I think affordable Windows 8 tablets like the Dell Venue Pro 8 which cost $229-299 can be good enough for most laptop tasks when you also plug in a USB keyboard, and mouse which is better for browsing desktop style websites, typing documents, and checking e-mail.

Cheaper used or new $100-200 Laptops which use Ubuntu Linux, Linux Mint, Chrome OS, Android, and Puppy Linux can be good enough for most laptop tasks as well.

Well, that depends. I like the fact that I can take my laptop anywhere but I have limited battery life on it so I can only be away from a charger for so long. I don't have to worry about that with my desktop, however, I can't go any where I want with my desktop.

Laptop. I like being able to use it anywhere in the house rather than being limited to a specific area when using a desktop.
