Discord is testing forums, new mod tools and homepages that surface hot topics in some servers.

Discord will start testing a handful of new features in some of its biggest communities this week. The social audio and chat platform got its start connecting gamers for online play, but it’s grown into one of the main ways to build a thriving online community, complete with custom emoji, live events, topic channels and a whole suite of third-party plugins that can do everything else.

The company recognizes that as servers grow, things can get unwieldy. At any given time, some of Discord’s most popular communities have hundreds of thousands of people online simultaneously (hit Chinese RPG Genshin Impact’s official server boasted more than 300,000 at the time of writing — and that’s just one example).

It's cool and wonderful, But why? most people do not want that option. Maybe that is a paid option for servers as I do not want to make forums even more dead ;P

That’s the scary part these platforms are already thriving but they’re trying to make forums die 🧐

Ironically this is an indication of how popular Discord has become. Some of their more popular communities are massive which often results in too many people attempting to chat in real time. Forums as we all know allow for a more ordered conversation thus spreading the load on oversubscribed channels. It's worth noting this is not the only addition Discord is currently testing.

We've seen multiple social media platforms adapt in order to expand their user base and this is no different. In my view the majority of forum software has been slow to adapt when it comes to capturing new audiences which makes our job harder. I've seen a lot of forums migrate to Discord in the last few years and I fear this may well attract a few more.

I might do the same tbh..

on second thought forums are dying because people like quick garbage, discord forums look boring.

The issue with forums nowadays is they focused on the social aspect of communicating rather than the actual communication channels. You can tell people don’t care about profile comments, design and all that crap.

What people care about is stuff like real time topic updates. Multimedia and whatever else within discussion. It’s why everyone moved to discord. Forums do work, it’s why they were so popular 10 years ago. There just needs to be a way to make them popular again.

They look very "reddit" style with topic-based discussions over actual forums. I guess they can prove me wrong there as I have only seen pictures, but I am not very impressed by their look the same way I do not enjoy the reddit style of conversation over a forum.

I don’t think this will replace traditional forum software, but it might make an impact on sales.
Ditto to this.

The advantage forum software has is that threads can be indexed by search engines, resulting in more traffic to the forum.

I don’t think Discord will ever replace forums because with say Xenforo you can code your own features and get indexed by google.

DIscord is nothing like a forum software at all, not even web-based if you using the software ;P

I don't know how I feel about this. I prefer forums to discord, merging the two is just odd to me. :V I do have a discord server that I haven't used in years, maybe when they roll this update out for every server I'll check it out. I still prefer Guilded to discord, and it stinks that barely anyone uses Guilded. :\

People only care about what’s trendy, So decent sites & apps suffer 🙁

It's that quick dopamine hit of posting a meme or a short comment and leaving quickly. I still prefer forums over the likes of Twitter or Facebook, and I can control the experience in how content is presented. Discord has been copying a lot of elements from Guilded while adding some of the functionality behind their Nitro wall.
