Do you do all your link building yourself manually? or Do you pay others to do it for you?

Buying backlinks will do more harm than good so no 😛

I don't buy backlinks, but they might be good for traffic - though, of course, terrible for SEO, so if focusing on SEO, then it wouldn't be a good idea - unless you're using a no-follow attribute.

backlinks are very important! but don't need to buy them

Paying for backlinks will violate Google's guidelines that will harm your website. I do it manually.

How does google know which backlinks to your website is paid for and which is manually done?

Google has a pretty advanced AI these days which is designed to work hard to get these things identified.
I'm not saying it will detect everything, quite the opposite actually (it will not detect most from my educated guess).
But, I would stay safe, plus there are much more efficient methods of promotion (such as facebook pages - asking friends, e.t.c.) also posting a wide range of commonly searched-for content will help (and maybe linking back to your page from other people will help as well).
Cheers.

I build backlinks to my site manually. I would think long and hard before buying backlinks, and especially from just 'anyone.' I think a better idea or strategy would be to buy link placement or ad space on sites that are in your topic sphere.

Eventhough it would be quite painfully building backlinks manually. But i think it is the best way for long-term development of our sites rather than using tools or buying

We do it ourselves only. We do not outsource our search engine optimization tasks.

I would never pay for a backlink. No point. I'm trying to make money off my site, not spend money. Therefore anything I can do without paying I will.

I'm thinking about buying directory and social bookmarking backlinks (called directory and social bookmarking submission). Anyway, to my knowledge it's not considered paid links by Google.

THAT ISN'T PAID LINKS BY GOOGLE I'D SAY ITS A WASTE OF MONEY THOUGH

Caps lock sorry

Not if they are from directories with good metrics (high domain authority, trust flow etc.)

It's a waste of money just use some free time to build your own or pay for an SEO company to do it for you as you'd be mad not to I don't really self advertise on FP but here is our site feel free to take a look https://wearedapa.co.uk/

If I see metrics go up - especially trust flow (Majestic.com) or the one from Ahrefs (have to pay to see that one), then I'm happy. Quality directories drive up these metrics, so they help out big time, unless the search engines are specifically ignoring directories - despite the help they give to metrics.
