I think it depends on your visitors. If a large portion of your visitors are using dial-up, or non-high speed Internet then it would not be a good idea to use a lot of flash, large pictures, and big files in your website since they probably leave before they can see your ad or buy from your affiliate links.
I optimize some of my websites to load a little faster by using pictures which are smaller, and have smaller file sizes, and I notice my earnings went up a little bit.
I also used W3 Total Cache ( http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/w3-total-cache/ ) to cache my to speed up my load time by 1-2 sec for my wordpress blog and changed to a faster loading template with only one header picture. The slight speed increase seem to increase my earnings a bit.
But, if your website is about online gaming for the Xbox 360 where the majority of users most likely have high speed Internet access then you might see a decrease in earnings since your template looks too plain because you are still trying too hard to make your site load fast on dial-up Internet by having a plain template and website which is not very fancy with high quality pictures, video, flash, and other high bandwidth objects which are designed to sell the brand like "Xbox Live" : http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live which is all about high quality, so I doubt MS cares much about how fast their sites load on dial-up connections since no one who games online with Xbox live Gold subscription use dial-up.
