Nope, but my previous schools I attended used censorship software to prevent students from going on adult entertainment, gambling, and other websites which were against the school's internet usage terms of service.

I think censorship programs are only necessary if you or a family member spend too much time watching adult movies, gambling, and other addictive websites and can't stop... 😛

Yes i did when my step sister was living with me she went to but loads of p2p music site to download music. and most of them came with viruses. So i blocked all of them.

Re: Do you use censorship/parental control software on your

No, I don't, and I don't need to.

Re: Do you use censorship/parental control software on your

I'm the only one that uses my laptop, so no.

Re: Do you use censorship/parental control software on your

Lolno.

My Mum tried blocking MySpace a few years back. It didn't take long for us to get around it by going to au.myspace.com instead of myspace.com.

She's never bothered since and we simply have no reason to have a blocker on our home computers. My family and I are all adults (youngest person being 18), so it wouldn't be fair to even try anyway. 😛

I'm 18, so there is no reason to have blocks on my computer. I also have a 21 year old sister. I'm the only one that uses my account on my desktop. It is password protected. I do have the Visitor Guest account enabled with locks enabled for anyone that is a guest at my house and wishes to get online.

Re: Do you use censorship/parental control software on your

No, don't need to as don't have any kids.

Re: Do you use censorship/parental control software on your

No, because I'm an adult and only person using this PC, would be kinda stupid to block myself from accessing certain sites 😛

Re: Do you use censorship/parental control software on your

I'm an adult, so there's no need. Back in High School it was easy to break through the school's Surf-Watch program to get to sites we otherwise couldn't.

Re: Do you use censorship/parental control software on your

I think using censorship software can prevent viruses from porn sites, and other sites commonly associated with viruses, spyware, and malware, drive by downloads as long as the censorship software keeps an up to date list on what porn sites, and virus + malware domain names to block.

I notice some less reputable sites link to sites which feel unsafe, and may contain viruses.

Re: Do you use censorship/parental control software on your

I don't have any parental control software on my netbook, but once I have my new laptop, I'm going to install parental control software (part of Kaspersky), so that I can limit the things other people using my laptop can do (Ex: no downloading, no inappropriate websites, etc.) so there is less of a chance of getting viruses, etc. 🙂
(I've done it in the past, and it really does work well.)

Censorship is baaaad.

My school has internet blocks and I was always coming up with new and creative ways to get around them, but now I'm in sixth form it's all unblocked for me anyway 😛

Re: Do you use censorship/parental control software on your

Indeed, Censorship is bad when it comes to blocking legitimate websites like Facebook, YouTube, and other sites, or used to filter out opposing points of view like how the internet in Iran, North Korea, and other non-democratic countries block western websites which are pro-democracy and freedom.

But, it could save your computer from getting infected by a nasty porn virus on an unethical porn site designed to secretly install a virus on your PC to show you pop-ups with adult content to get you addicted to their site's content.

Plus, with the popularity of URL shortener like tinyurl, bit.ly, etc, you never know what site you are clicking till you visit it. Having a filter can prevent you from accidentally visiting a site which you do not want to view.

I just use NoScript. More often than not, dodgy sites can't infect your computer with anything if they can't even run scripts, and besides, I have a Mac, so if they really wanted to do something to my system, I'd need to give them my admin password, and that ain't gonna happen 😛

I literally LOL'd at that!

The school blocked everything though, upto and including Google!

Re: Do you use censorship/parental control software on your

I use noscript as well. It works great. I'm more concerned about accidentally downloading illegal content which can mean jail time if I can't prove my case that it was an accident.

You have to be very careful not to accidentlally download/stream illegal porn since it can really mess up your life if the police finds up.

Like this guy in this video who got 20 years in prison for downloading underage porn by accident with his internet connection.

Yeah, Limewire's known for being dodgy anyway, not least because you don't actually know what you're downloading until you've downloaded it.

In the UK where I live, though, that kind of stuff is censored on 99% of ISPs anyway. The only problem I have with this is that the list of blocked sites is controlled by one organisation and they pretty much have the power to add anything they want to that list whenever they want, and I'm not sure I trust them with such power, especially since they once started censoring Wikipedia articles because of album art they didn't like, despite the fact that said album art was on sites like Amazon etc and they weren't touched...

Plus, you have to ask yourself... Is censorship really the answer?

Re: Do you use censorship/parental control software on your

I used it when the kids where younger as my daughter would be on line 24/7if she could get away with it and my son would go on sites that were not suitable for him when he was under 18
but they both have home now so i dont need it

plus i never used limewire did not like it

Re: Do you use censorship/parental control software on your

Every computer that a kid can use, must have parental control. Internet might be dangerous or ungly sometimes. I personally use k9 web protection. It works on many browsers.
