does a larger staff discourage new users?

I would say so which is why I am the only mod on my forum. I want it to be as welcoming as possible.

When I join a forum, I join for the content and the community. I don't think staff number has anything to do with new users joining the forum.

If the forum is big, I would expect it to have a large Staff number for good moderation. However, a small forum that is not that active should only have 1 or 2. Otherwise there's not enough jobs to go around & there can be conflicts.

I agree with the above keeping staff numbers to when you need them to keep the community safe from conflict, spam etc. once the community builds up you can promote trusted members to help as they have shown support towards your community.

i think its all based on how the community is and how much work you need help with to keep a community safe and clean, only need more staff when you need it and as you grow

I have a decent sized forum and just 2 staff members. We just restarted though so if activity gets back up to where it once was, then we might need to add some more people on.
