This is probably a natural consequence of the fact that one software can't possibly cater to all situations, but just about every forum software these days, just seems to generally suck.

No matter what they do, they just seem to... Fall flat. And even when it's "good enough", it's usually fairly rigid and doesn't do quite what you want. This isn't even adding the fact that many software have largely remained the same for four years or so with just incremental improvements to tide people over.

Maybe, the only real way to go these days is custom? But, that takes a fair bit of manpower and expertise. Curious thing, indeed.

1) get software
2) get "flat" theme
3) make sure AJAX is being used to refresh threads & show new replies
4) make sure ajax is used to avoid page refresh when you write a reply
5) get good plugins

IPB doesn't suck, but need allot of cash behind you
Agreed!

IPB3 is my favourite board software, have a lot of nostalgia using boards on that software and it just looked really good for the time out of the box

IPS4 is good, but a bit bloated for most needs

I think, among the "traditional" forums, IPB does a rather good job with keeping their software modern and fresh, albeit it is pretty expensive.

I think it probably comes down to what people are willing to put into running a site. If you want something a specific way, it's likely you can't get it right out of the box like that. So, you'll have to edit code yourself, learn your way around it, and make it just how you want. People sometimes just aren't willing to put in that effort.

Everyone's preference really. Personally, I prefer MyBB. Refuse to join SMF and vBulletins. XF and IPB are meh.

Some software requires more customization - depending on the situation. Also, some themes require more work. For instance, the Pad theme I have (Doh Theme) simply won't allow anything but a skinny logo - so I have put in image in the background.

I got this one guy off of MyBB (over to XF) because he just simply having too many problems with it. Well, maybe he could have eventually fixed it, but I wasn't patient.

There's not many good styles for MyBB tho that are both free and responsive, gotta admit that

I wonder if anyone managed to make IPB3 compatible with PHP 7.x yet... shame those changes can't be made by the community as it's not open source :/

I don't think so!

Wow lol... I wish invision would release their old versions source code and let the community work from it as there not going to profit from IPB3 sales or such anymore

Iirc they released 1.x long ago
