Couldn't really think of a better title for this topic, have one, let me know 😛

Basically, was just doing some browsing, and decided to type in www.gaming.com. There is nothing on the site except external links! Sites like this really bug me because a domain like that could be put to so much better use, and anyone who would want to buy it would probably be looking to pay in the 5 or 6 figure sums.

Do you know of any other sites like this?

I'd have to agree with you about this. People who buy domains should think twice about what they are going to use it for.

Yeah it annoys me too. They would have good use. You get all of the pretty much:

host.com
music.com
forums.com

All of them are a waste.

Who wants to know why they do it?
There premium high searched domains which means if they park them they make $$$$$ which is what they do.
Most of those domains where reg'd way way back.

They annoy me to but nothing we can do about it.

Exactly, it's not rocket science, the owners of those domains know precisely what they are doing.

True, ignorant people do everything that involves money, for good or bad when it comes for sales, hosting, exchanges that involve real life money, domains, etc. No offense 😉

I normally just check the WhoIs and email them with a $15-20 offer, most people that let this happen to their sites don't really understand the value of their domains.

Worth a try, emailing now! 😛

So you're saying that professional domainers don't know what they're doing? Please, there is nothing wrong with parking a domain and it can make you some good money if it has type in traffic. A lot of parked domains are on sale too, so you can try to purchase them but domainers are going to know their worth, or already have them listed on sites. A parked domain contributes to the web pretty much as much as most forums anyhow so it's not a waste 😛.

Had a good chuckle at Gimgak's post. But it's true. They do know the worth of say, forums.com, and will not sell them for a low sum.

But with a site like, say, Nukia.com, it is indeed worth a try.

Maybe they just don't have the time to make a proper website with it since they already have a lot of websites they are running, or they're lazy, and are unmotivated to do something with their domain.

All those domains would of been purchased in the early stages of the internet so maybe the people who own them no longer have an interest in a certain domain niche.

I got a feeling a lot of these domains are probably owned by the same person for years, and might eventually expire after 10 years.

They might make 10s of thousands or more if they use their website building, SEO, coding, and content writing skills to make a useful website, blog, or forum, and they could have fame as the owner of an exciting website rather then an anonymous owner with a page full of ads.

Like http://bored.com used to be a very dull site with links to funnier sites, and now it is a flash games site which probably make more then when it was a link site to funnier websites.

And maybe it isn't a person who owns them. And even if they do, they may be making money by placing advertisements on their domain. As the years go by, their domain will be worth more, more and more until they eventually decide to sell. 🙂

"Back then", domains were free, in fact, to own a domain was something not many people even considered to be worth your time. Sure enough, people started registering hundreds if not thousands of domains for 10+ years and so that's why today, you see many parked and left to be profited off by type in traffic. If only we had today's knowledge 20 years ago...

They did, and they want to hold that domain to sell it for a lot of money.

-- 15 Feb 2012, 16:50 --

That's a really ignorant statement. Domain parking is a very profitable thing to do, wanting profit doesn't make you ignorant, calling others ignorant for doing what they want which doesn't hurt others IS ignorant.

I wasn't necessarily talking about this specific one, nor the situation of this one. I was referring to domains that were taken in general. Not all taken domains are parked and not all parked domains are taken by professionals. There are such things as people that are new, especially people that hear about doing something, don't get the finer details, and just throw it up. If you don't believe that last part, look at how many people come to this forum, start their own with little to no knowledge.

Is domain parking as profitable as it used to be since I heard a lot of popular search engines are ranking parked domains a lot lower in the natural "search engine result pages"/serps, and ranking authority websites like ESPN, Amazon, Ebay, Wikipedia, etc with useful content a lot higher?

I also don't know of many people who still type in domains like gaming.com to find information on gaming since most of the people I know just use Google, Facebook, Twitter, and other Search engines and social networks for information on topics they are interested in.

A lot of other sites might also be removing links to parked domain sites since a lot of people don't like linking to poor content sites, and think linking to poor sites will hurt their search engine rankings and reputation.

It doesn't matter how search engines rank these domains; it's all about the type-in traffic, rather than getting hits on Google.
