Dont you hate it when you ask nicely for somebody to join your Forum, and they say yes... but never join?

Gets annoying but it's something that always happens. Just like with exchanges, you know someone will always forget/lose interest/etc so its best to simply move on as long as most of your exchanges dont end that way.

I dont think Ive ever directly asked someone to join my forum.

Don't you hate it when you walk by a store and the employees walk outside and ask you to come into their store to look at products? No, because it never happens. Asking someone to enter your store just to look is the same as asking someone to join your forum if they're not interested. Business owners know that the only quality sales you'll make (returning buyers, recommending to friends, etc) are from people who purchase something willingly. If they don't want to enter the store, then asking them to come in will not get them to buy anything, but will make them less fond of the store. This is just like if they don't want to join your forum, asking them to do so is only adding a new useless member in the forum that won't do anything.

Furthermore, I dislike it when anyone asks me to join their forum. If I want to join, I'll join, if I don't, then them persuading me will only lessen the chances of me joining the forum. I'm sure you don't want to be pestered by someone to join a community which you have no interest in whatsoever.

So to your question, no, I don't hate it when someone doesn't join my forum when I ask them, because I don't ask people, and they're not obliged to join it either.

It does at the mall on a slow weekday. 😛

Well that's actually saddening to hear, as that will do nothing for their lack in sales and revenue. I'm beginning to wonder why businesses and online forums/communities don't follow the golden rule, "Think like a customer." Who gets attracted and influenced to purchase a product from someone begging you to enter their store, no one.

I don't know what part of Australia you live in or where you shop, but this does happen in Australia. Alternatively, they hand out flyers to invite you into their store. They don't beg; they invite.

I'm talking about successful businesses, not failing local ones. Also, I have not once been 'invited' in by an employee of the store. Which store has ever invited you in?

They'll get me in if they have a good sale going or free samples to give out. 😛

Free samples are an amazing marketing technique. Give potential customers a taste of something, like showing guests content on your forum.

Great to see your speculation. Where did I say "local ones" or "failing"? I'm sure if you go to JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, phone dealerships, Dominos, Pizza Hut, and even Hoyts, you will occasionally have people invite you by providing flyers and even talk to you. You may not have been invited, but I can assure you that it does happen more often than you think, unless you genuinely think the businesses/franchises that I have named are not successful enough. Having that personal touch in business and marketing is essential in assuring consumers and potential consumers that the business can associate and identify themselves with the people they are targeting.

Actually quite common, maybe not for a full store but stands in airports or at the mall almost always do this.

I'm not speculating, it's just that I've never seen anyone get invited in by the stores you listed above. I also happen to visit these stores on a weekly/fortnightly basis. Maybe we live in different areas, but we can both agree that this does not happen every single day, and that's also not how they got popular.

-- 20 Apr 2011, 16:47 --

Everyone seems to continuously comment on the introduction of that post, how about a new comment on a different part of the reply? We get it, some businesses do that, but the fact is, asking the public to come into your store does not help. Handing fliers is completely different, it's like having a guest notice on your forum.

Don't you hate it when you walk by a homeless person and the bum asks you for money? No, because it never happens.

Wait it does happen, and people do give them money.

You are speculating in assuming I am talking about "failing local ones". I bet we do live in different areas, but I do agree it doesn't happen daily and obviously not how they got popular. I have noticed out on 'shopping night' (Thursday), they have a person out there greeting people, making them feel welcome.

Well then if you say so. So I guess we both agree. I'm sure you also agree that if someone asked you 'nicely' to join a forum you have no interest in, it would irritate you a tad/you wouldn't comply.

-- 20 Apr 2011, 16:54 --

Giving a homeless person money does not relate to this forums scenario. It's actually when a forum asks for money from a random visitor, guess what? It rarely happens. Asking some random visitor to your website for a donation will not frequently work unless you're offering some amazing free content.

Don't you hate it when you some kid knocks on your door selling candy to raise money for a school trip or something? No, because it never happens.

That happens too... 😛

The fact is, in real world people actively confront other people asking them to do something or buy something and it does work on some and does not on others. Some people feel bad saying "No" while others can do it with ease.

I don't think you understand these analogies. They buy candy from the kids because:

A) - They like candy
B) - It's a little kid
C) - Goes for a good cause

A/B/C don't relate to your forum.

Not really, obviously I'd prefer if they joined and became active, but most people have good intentions yet they are busy. When they tell you they will join, they probably fully intend to join, but then forget about it, don't get round to it, put it to the bottom of their to do list, etc. Try to only invite people who could genuinely benefit from your forum and if they still haven't joined, sometime after saying they would, a gentle reminder probably wouldn't do any harm.

You may have heard of the "ABC of selling" - Always Be Closing. If you are proud of your forum and you run your site well, you should never be ashamed or embarrassed about asking someone to join. Bill Gates (or insert the name of any other successful business person) would not be where he is today if he hadn't gone out and sold what he had to offer.

I think I've done this before. It took a while for them to join not sure if they didn't really want to or just didn't have the time to. About a day later they finally registered.
