Following the announcement of the Facebook Company changing its name to Meta, what are your thoughts?

Do you think Meta represents the brand better?

Difficult to say. The intent is certainly clear: they want to branch into a sort of immersive experience for customers...but I'm not certain that the market necessarily wants that kind of experience. I think there's a form of "culture shock" that defines our experience with computers and information technology; it's certainly less pronounced with younger generations, but it's still very much there. The idea of immersing one's self in that could be off-putting.

As well, it's hard not to see this as an attempt to distract from the current social and regulatory problems that Facebook is undergoing, even if I don't necessarily agree with the consensus behind the whistleblower revelations which sparked them.

This took me by surprise this morning, still waiting to watch the Keynote to understand the decision behind the rename.

It reminds me of when they changed the Sears Tower in Chicago to Willis Tower and everyone still calls it the Sears Tower :meh:

It's about rebranding and changing the old ways. Even that FB is one of the busiest website's and owns most other sites. What I do not get is why to call it Meta ;P

I mean I see so much Meta tags and people playing Meta gaming 😛

I had a Facebook account but it was barebones. They are way too biased. From what I gathered, they are changing their name to revamp the whole look. Most people associate Facebook with something, either good or bad, changing the name is to have people forget who they are & what they are about. It’s a marketing ploy. What’s that saying? A wolf in sheep’s clothing is still a wolf.

WhatsApp might be next on there list to change the name LOL

Seems like it is mostly a move to push the Facebook name away from the new services the company is picking up. Like VR gaming and such. It is no secret that users of the Oculus headsets were not fans of having to link everything to Facebook's network. So, just like Google rebranding to Alphabet, it will likely help ease the mind of many who are buying the "new" Meta Occulus VR gear and having to create a Meta account, even if it is just a face-value thing.

Plus they are not wrong by saying that 'Facebook" no longer correctly represents the brand as they pick up more and more non-social media services.

I opened Instagram today and the splash screen says ‘by Meta’ now so they applied the changes quickly.

I just read that another company already had applied to trademark the name Meta, and now the original owners are asking Facebook to pay $20 Million to take over the trademark of Meta. (source)

I was hoping the US government would have seized it when they hauled Mark into court. Facebook just causes problems and spreads disinformation. Everyone would be better off without it.

That's pocket change for them. I'm sure they'd pay that no problem. 😛

This reminds me of when Google changed their company name to Alphabet. I suppose it makes sense to come up with a parent company name since they're doing so much more than Facebook now.

When does the name change happen?

Still saying FB

I think it's a really dumb name change personally, but I think they are still sticking with FB as well. Just crazy.
