Facebook Rebrand to Meta?

I think it's a pretty pointless name change and like others have said with Google & Alphabet. It's a bit pointless.

It makes sense if they want to diversify their portfolio. Once we all get used to Meta, one could imagine that whenever there are bad news about Facebook circulating the PR harm that results from it will stick to Facebook only, and stick less to the other Meta companies. So the PR-department of Facebook might have a really harsh week without implicating the PR-departments of Instagram and other Meta daughter companies.

I think because of how high a profile Facebook has, I don't think that'll work for existing companies like Instagram and WhatsApp although any new companies they create or acquire may be safe from Facebook's reputation.

The name change of the parent company makes much more sense to me now than when it was first publicized.

A lot of news outlets were suggesting the change was because the Facebook brand had become toxic. The real reason it seems is because the company/Zuckerberg is convinced that the developing 'metaverse' is going to be huge, far, far bigger than Facebook.

It's a gamble but Microsoft are treading the same path with their acquisition of a major gaming company so it'll be interesting to see if it works out in the long run.

Do you guys think that the rebrand was a significant reason why their stock value's major drop?

I think there were multiple reasons for the drop, rebranding being perhaps one of the least significant. Tech stocks in general have taken a bit of pounding, recently including Alphabet/Google, Apple and Microsoft.

Facebook/Meta reported a decline in profits in addition to a first time ever decline in users due to competition from other platforms. That was probably the main reason for the drop. Interestingly it appears the younger generation is moving away from Facebook onto other types of social media.

Metaverse is the hailmary. Management has seen these numbers coming probably for several quarters and the acceleration of the rebrand has been preparation for that. After all, why would they rebrand without a finished product?

To me at this point Meta/FB has to be taken as an entirely new enterprise. A startup with access to billions of users and tons of capital/talent to seed their new venture.

They can change their name and logo, but they will still be rubbish. 🙂

Rebranding something as common as household soap isn't a good idea. It just doesn't make sense. It's just dumb.

None of it will work. I wrote an article about it explaining why, and how to solve them. One of those problem statements i made is we already have this... so called "Metaverse."

Grand Theft Auto V sold over 150 Million units worldwide.
Call of Duty Warzone is at over 70 Million "installed."
Call of Duty franchise is at 400 Million (Including Warzone)
Fortnite
Minecraft

We don't need this... Metaverse.

The success of this metaverse depends on Oculus. Their primary business model is these social media websites. They don't have consoles, tablets, phones or anything to support this... "metaverse."
