Do people still care about forum smilies? Are they used a ton still? I use them once in a while.

I have custom smilies on my Pokemon forum. I didn't add any new ones, but edited the existing ones. I tend to use smilies in quite a few of my posts. 😛

My forum is on Proboards & we have a Default set. Then members are free to put in their own. I just do simple ones from keyboard entries i.e. 🙂 😀
Some forums have hundreds. Forum Promotion has quite a few 😵😱
I do use them occasionally and I like to keep a consistent set on my forums of somewhere between 5 and 20. I'll change them if I find a better defined set but I don't add to them.

Gifs hosted on a 3rd party website. If that website ever goes offline you’ll have thousands of broken images on your forum. I worry about that on mine but it is what it is. *shrugs*

I doubt the GIPHY website will ever disappear.

It's not just about the site disappearing though. Photobucket destroyed hundreds of thousands of sites without disappearing.

It was free to use for years so site owners uploaded billions of images rather than store them locally. Photobucket put all the images behind a paywall which not only stopped them from being displayed, it also stopped the image owners from downloading them unless of course they paid.
This is why it's unwise to store any of your forum's data or images away from your home server.
