I seriously don't know where you get limited updates from.
I use vBulletin (owned license) and if there's a security risk, then they usually release a patch within hours.
The support is the best you could wish for, believe me.
There is just a $30 charge each year if you wish to access the members area for another year -- but you don't have too.
For an owned license, it will cost Fowler £106 inc VAT.
But, you've got to think about money wise. Because sooner or later -- these forums will not be able to stay on a shared hosting account, so your going to need the financial backing.
Limited updates probably means the one year and after one year, I think you have to pay for another year of updates but after the first year, the cost is cheaper and you don't have to buy more updates if you don't want to.
I'm sorry, but that is bloody ridiculous. First of all, you have to pay for the license, then you have to pay for support after a year? vBulletin is a farce, and a scam. Ok, perhaps it has its advantages if your forum makes a substantial amount of revenue, but other than that, there'd no point in upgrading.
Believe me, its worth every penny. I own 2 vBulletin forums and i would never go back to ANYTHING else. It's so easy once you get used to it and they can look so nice and professional, just see my 2 forums for example. I think you should go for it.
(FYI, 22 people want a change of some sort and 15 want it the same)
i don't think there is likely to be a change any time soon,
as previously mentioned, there are advanced mods installed on this forum auch as the Cash Mod (the version which gives different groups different abilities) and the SEO Mod which i doubt is available for vB.
We won't be changing the software for a couple of months atleast anyway as it will take a lot of time to convert and we don't have alot of time to do something this big at the moment. We would need to convert the forum, install a few decent styles, install the important mods (like cash mod) and configure everything although we want to make a decision on this soon so we can plan for it and know what we are doing.
vB forums, like any other forum software, look like however the template tells them to look like. If you really wanted to you could probably make the vB defualt skin into a phpBB one.
If FP DOES change hosts, will this forum be able to be imported?
because it will look better seeing thousands of posts instead of very little (in the beginning)
i would go with SMF and also it has this theme for it too 😉
EDIT: well the have the red virstion but im making it blue 🙂
edit go here to see my progress on it http://purejet.net/forums/
