This is an idea which I actually came up with a year and a half ago, but it's a very interesting one.
You could create a link on one forum instance and it could link to another and pull in information.
E.g. Maybe, a forum that is especially a link, could pull in meta information from the linked to forum like the last post, maybe a common feed, etc.
This might be useful to encourage people to setup small groups of forums rather than really big all-encompassing ones or maybe have multiple sites owned by different admins mutually benefiting each other, if they wish it to be so.
The only snag would be inter-software co-operation, as every software runs around doing their own thing and each like their autonomy. That said, perhaps a common feel might be less confusing for users?
