I use to be a Style Tech at FreeForums.org, they rubbish, personal opinion but I think their service is poor, they're uptime is also poor, they're support is poor, and they're features/layout and 'friendliness' is awful.
Worst free service ever in my opinion.

We are a freeforums site and we have yet to have any major issues with them. I have been lucky in finding someone to help when I need it.
The only issue that we have had are the recent downtime and trying to change our styles.
Its fairly easy for us to use which is important for us since we are just getting up and running and doing everything ourselves.

I would just get a domain. With one, throw on some google ads and it will pay for itself.
They have the following philosophy:
"Hey guyz, why don't we go off and market an open sourced forum software on the second rate server we bought from that guy in the dark alley over there with advertisements on every page and super cool modz we found off google!"
While hosts like ZetaBoards at least made their forum software, FreeForums.org is basically offering you phpBB3 with about half of the functions of the real thing either removed or sold in their "premium" package. ZetaBoards allows you to edit the CSS and the Template while FreeForums.org doesn't. ZB even allows you to make webpages! It's an outrage. While phpBB3 is one of the best pieces of software out there they basically grabbed phpBB, wadded it up into a ball, and threw the good parts of it in the trashcan.
Anyone who considers FreeForums.org should instead go to phpbb.com, download phpBB3, get a free web-host (yes, it's free, but it's just as good as freeforums) and download a skin. It's strictly better.

IF you know what's good for you - stay well away from FreeForums.org . There are very dark areas in their organisation, including lying, deceit, breaking privacy laws and other related nonsense.

If you want a free phpbb3 forum host use forumer or anything thats not freeforums...
If anything hire a an experienced phpbb3 user and get them to help you install phpbb3 from scratch.

I just told the Co-Founder/Co-Admin of my board about this and she is really curious now as well. We have been hoping to get donations to buy a domain but we may just do it sooner !
If we buy a domain does that get us off of freeforums ? How does that work ?

If you had a domain it would mask that you were hosted by Freeforums unless someone looked at the copyright. I would recommend, for customization's sake, that you move from freeforums.org to phpBB3 on a free web host such as novahost.org. You can download phpBB3 from phpbb.com and you can download an FTP client to upload the phpbb3 files by searching google for "FTP client" or by going to FileZilla's website.

File Transfer Protocol, or FTP for short, is a system which allows you to communicate with your server quickly. You can use an FTP client to upload files en mass to your site, such as an entire folder containing anything from a forum, to a skin, to some mods. To do this on a cPanel host go to your main FTP account, select configure, take the details for connections and insert them into the fields on your client, then you can select files from your computer to upload to the specified areas of your server.
