FreeForums.org Hosted Forums Are No Longer Ad-Free!!!

Yep, thats right. FreeForums.org are now forcing ads on your forums! Although you can purchase Ad-Removal for $4.95/month, which is quite expensive seeing as you can get Advanced Hosting for not much more a month which gives you full control over your forum and no ads!

We appreciate that you choose FreeForums.org to host your forum, and would like to let you know of some important changes coming up.

In February, 2007, we launched FreeForums.org and have experienced phenomenal growth since then. In just three months of launching we built a loyal customer base that rivaled that of hosts who have been around for years.

Within just one week of the launch, we reported hitting our goal of 1000 forums . And, in one year, we reached over 150,000 hosted forums. It's unheard of for a forum host to experience the kind of growth we have. We have been able to provide a level of services not offered anywhere else—and at a time when we have seen hosting sites exit the forum hosting business and start-ups struggle to keep forums up—we have raised the industry bar for what's expected from a host.

With this huge growth we have run into some issues scaling the hardware and staff to keep up with the huge and expensive task of providing the level of service our users have come to love and expect.

To continue providing this exemplary service, we have made the decision to implement an ad-revenue sharing model on all forums as of February 7th 2008. This will provide you a chance to earn income, as well as enable us to pay for server costs. While this may come as an unwanted change to some, it's absolutely necessary to ensure the continued operation of this site as a free service. With server costs pushing over five figures a month, and six paid staff members (three full time) there is no other way to keep the site running.

Our users have made it clear they prefer a stable, ad-supported service over a host with a lot of downtime, and we have taken that into account when making this decision.

We have been very pleased with how long we were able to go without ads. We served almost one Billion (1,000,000,000) ad-free impressions and went over a year without any ads. We are the only forum host in the history of the Internet to serve this many ad-free impressions and that is certainly something to be proud of. One thing is certain, while the ad-free model works for small forum hosts (ie. less than 1000 forums) it won't last forever as maintenance costs go up and up. It's simply not possible to run a business with zero revenue.

FreeForums.org will continue to give a share of the ad-revenue to our users. Over the next few weeks we will be launching the revenue sharing program that lets you use your AdSense code on your forum to make money. This will benefit our users by allowing them to get paid for the time they spend on their forum and letting them afford upgrades to improve their forum. FreeForums.org is currently the only forum host to share revenue with the forum owners. We also plan to use this revenue to hire additional staff members and speed up the development of new features and services.

For those profoundly against sponsors of any kind we have a no-ad option available. We will offer full ad-removal services for $4.95/month, which will remove all ads from your forum. For a limited time, we will waive the first 30 days if you email us by February 15, 2008, with a 250 word response on what you like about FreeForums.org and why you need ad-removal. Email us at [email protected].

This is great milestone for FreeForums.org and our dedicated users. We are committed to providing the best free forum hosting service. This will allow us to improve on the already high level of services and allow us to offer even more industry-leading features. We have been working very hard on the phpBB3 version and we have some ground-breaking features to go along with it. We will be launching a free blog hosting service to integrate with your forums and build your community of members. Since implementing our new server network, our users have seen close to 100% uptime. We plan to continue to improve on this by investing in more backup and fail over systems.

On behalf of the entire team we thank you for using FreeForums.org

What are your thoughts about this?

They will be one of the worst ad supported forum host... -roll-

This just makes me hate them even more now.

tell me about it. It sucks...... They suck.... The only reason I was with them was because of the ad free service.... Their is no way I am paying that much for ad removal when I can advanced hosting for about the same...

-roll- ~rolleyes~

What kind of ads are they going to be using? google ads? in text ads? other type?

I think kontera ads (whatever they are) and they are allowing you to place google adsense on your forum too.

Yeah.. the ones most people hate -lol-

They really know how to make people happy...

Yeah but if you saw how much Division is paying for this he cant make it go any longer for free. Be grateful he didnt just shut it down like some other hosts.

well at least they give you some of the money!
watch adsense say that they are clicking and that they can't use adsense anymore

I wouldn't be surprised if that happens...

I wouldn't either...

I will be purchasing advanced hosting as soon as I get the dough....

i think this feedback is slightly harsh. Let's put things into perspective, the Administrators pay a 5 figure sum, every month to host freeforums.org and all of its forums - how many donations do you think they get from the forum owners? None probably.

In the near future, i will be sending regular donations to the administrators to help with hosting costs. I feel it's slightly unfair to give them this kind of feedback, considering you are getting a "FreeForum", with good support, and decent features other free hosts don't have.

Anyway, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but i think it's personally reasonable to place ads on your forum. Also, at least they will allow you to place your adsense code on there, when you think about it, they'll be giving you an oportunity to earn money from a forum you aren't even paying for...

Can i also point out that they are adding ads to a service that has more problems then most other forum hosts... uite often they are down and when they are up you either get told your forum is deleted, or very slow loading or the mod center disappears or the portal gappears for no reason. You also can't move topics without losing posts (this has been a problem for months) also you quite often get the post doesn't exist error because the servers are always out of sync (also been a problem for months).

Im sorry but to me that puts them miles behind all other hosts now. The only difference was ff.org was adfree and that was all that put them ahead of the other... Now that is gone.

couldn't of said it any better. The only reason people were with them and dealt with the constant issues is because of them being ad-free as well as they have a decent set of mods installed. Now, no longer ad-free, and probably one of the worst forum hosts on the net.

as I am typing this - EVERY FREEFORUMS HOSTED FORUM IS DOWN atm

The only good thing is the freeupgrades but guess what... They are down and not working and haven't been working for months! Nothing works properly and i can't see things being fixed... There has been constant problems since April and there seems to be more and more problems that are not being fixed as time goes on. I don't beleive anything they say any more. People will start to leave and the problems will get to much and they will disappear in my opinion.
