It's not a rumor it's true. And to be honest it's not Godaddy who raises their prices it's their registrar system that does.

Although ICANN "moderates" world domains, GoDaddy themselves can increase prices accordingly. They aren't a reseller; they are an actual accredited domain name registrar, unlike Namecheap, who is a reseller off Enom.

Yeah, but they're at the hands of verisign too. When verisign is allowed to and wants to (which is always) charge more for coms & nets most registrars change their prices so they don't loose any money.

True that, but VeriSign doesn't "need" to raise prices by a significant amount as there are plenty of domain registrars which can make them money.
