To be honest I discourage members from tlkin lik dis as well, it ruins the overall impression of the forum.

I was just trying to correct him before someone else did, but I can be picky at times....Also about the spelling mistakes....You kind spelled wrong definitely, grammar, and real on your first post.

The truth is I hate correcting people, but when your sitting in a classroom for 2 hours getting corrected......It sticks to you.

Everyone else on here has made generalised comments and not named names or made personalised comments ~ unlike you. Before you target and criticise anyone I suggest you make sure ALL your posts are error free ~ unlike the one quoted above ~ and all your facts are correct -😉-
The last time I checked I was a female and therefore don't like being referred to as a 'dude' or 'him'.

Now back to the topic ~ a few typo's or innocent spelling mistakes can be forgiven, and I think you have to give exception to those who may be Dyslexic. But 'lazy speak' or 'txt speak' puts me off and also discourage it on my forum as Meta so rightly says

Yes, thank you Mel. It can be quite a struggle sometimes on a forum like mine which, although the majority of my members are adults, does attract younger people who tend to tlk liek dis more than the adults. If you can discourage it it creates not only a better impression overall but I find that when people are asked to type properly it makes them talk to each other in a more civilised and mature way. There's psychology in there somewhere.

I hate trying to decipher a post thats full of lazy txt speak, I find it so irritating

I don't mind typo's but non-stop 'por gramr an spelin errerz' (LOL) drive me up the wall.

With is not wit, the is not da, did is not dit and that is not dat.

I think that my forum also has some grammar mistake because some of the English are translated by me from Chinese.

Well that's a different case altogether pentagon, if the grammar/spelling isn't correct due to English not being a persons first language then you can't fault that person. It's laziness I despise.

If the forum itself (like the categories, news etc.) is all riddled with grammar errors than yes that will make a really bad impression. However, if it is a few members who don't have the best spelling or grammar it's not a big deal.

It only really matters to me when you are trying to be professional and when it comes to the actual forum (staff) posts/threads. As a staff you want to set a good example and you also want to represent a forum that is correctly spelt and has good grammar.

It can be off-putting when the staff members have the spelling and grammar of a 10-year-old. I used to have terrible spelling and grammar when I first started using computers. Slowly, I started learning from my mistakes. I use Grammarly to ensure my spelling and grammar are the best it can be. I often proofread a post before I hit the submit button even when Grammarly says I have no errors left.

If the forum descriptions have spelling and grammatical errors it can be off putting. Posts don't bother me as much, I usually can look past someone's poor spelling and grammar if I understand what they're saying. Minor things do bother me however, like the proper to being used. My brain is weird I suppose lol.

When it comes to members, if I can understand what they're saying, then I'll look past it. Obviously not looking for complete perfection on an online forum, but I still want to be able to understand what's being said so I can participate. When it comes to the forum itself, like with descriptions and important topics like the rules, it's a lot more off putting there. It's not going to be the end of the world for me if they're missing a comma or a few words are misspelled, but if it all "lookz lyk dis" and it's not just being used as an example of bad grammar/spelling, then that's definitely a big turn off for me. Just kinda shows you don't care and aren't willing to do something as simple as running a spell/grammar check for a modicum of professionalism.

I use the Grammarly browser extension all the time and it helps, can be a pain but at the same time it does help. I am not paying for it though, already paying enough each month as it is.

It depends.

Humans are not perfect. The more we spend on trying to perfect something is the more we procrastinate and not get the job done and get the thing published.

By trying to be perfect, we're trying to be more than human.

If I saw a forum that was completely perfect grammar and no mistakes, I'd assume AI was used to make that happen and that would turn me off more than a mistake here and there.

I think some of the biggest grammar nazis just want to hear themselves complain.

But I did say it depends.

If the main language isn't English, then I understand. If the main language is English but there is no spelling or grammar etiquette being used at all, yeah, I'm probably going to pass.

I for the most part try to use the best grammar that I can. I have Grammarly and I use it to help me edit but I really try to do things myself for the most part.

I use English as a second language which means I have average language skills. I understand people can make mistakes with language and grammar but I cannot tolerate bad language and grammar

Grammar absolutely kills it for me honestly, I have some tolerance for it but if I can barely understand your written English that's problematic I think. There are free versions of things such as Grammarly these day's that I hope are available to those that need it.

If the majority of the posts are bad grammar, and the admins don't have decent spelling yes it'd turn me off.

Yes, but there are exceptions. If the staff/forum owner has a bunch of spelling and grammar errors then it's an issue. If there is a member who is struggling with spelling/grammar because English isn't their first language then I will be less harsh about it.

If the forum is riddled with grammar and spelling errors then I won't even bother signing up
