Today is a rare and very sad day in the UK.

A gunman named as Derrick Bird aged 52 from Whitehaven in Cumbria has randomly gunned down more than 37 people, 12 of which are now dead, 8 people are still in hospital, 3 of whom are in a critical condition.

The gunman final turned the gun on himself this afternoon in a field in Boot.

This type of thing is very rare in the UK

It has been a while since anything like a mass shooting has taken place in the UK but its more common than we think.

Never the less though my heart goes out to the families who have lost someone today and the guy that did it well he took the easy way out in the end didnt he?

I don't live in the UK, but I thin k it is horrible that people who do this type of stuff. God Bless those who died (minus the gunman 😡), and hopefully the ones injured can get better.

I think the whole thing's been blown out of proportion - I've killed at least 1,000 people on GTA IV and I'm still working for the government.

But yes, this is a sad day. Surprisingly rare in fact.

Latest rumour is that one of the dead is his own brother David, not sure how true this is yet? as things are still very much "up in the air" If this turns out to be true then his mother (whom he lived with) and is dying of cancer may just have had the final nail in her already planned coffin 🙁

It said on the news that he did shoot his own brother and i think two of his brothers friends. I didn't hear about the mum having cancer. Maybe this whole thing started because Derrick couldn't handle it all. Sure we'll soon find out

The news said that the first man he shot was a fellow taxi driver with whom he had had an argument with previously, there are also rumours of tax problems? I just think it's a guessing game right now, it's so weird how someone so friendly, polite and ever smiling suddenly becomes such a monster.

It's really not more common than we think.. Hence the mass media that occurs when it does happen.

I tend to know when things like this happen, though I'm not getting into specifics as to why, and shootings are always in the media spotlight. If no one knows about them, they didn't happen.

That said, very, very tragic. Heart really does go out to all of the victim's families.

As i always say. Its the quiet ones you have to look out for

I agree. This sort of thing is not as common as we think. All mass murders find someone of making it into the media

Another reason why I carry. 😎
If gun laws weren't so strict, things like this would have been stopped easily. Nevertheless, my condolences go out to the families of the injured and deceased.

HOW exactly would a relaxed approach to gun laws have prevented this?

You can't give a statement like that without backing it up.

Relaxed gun laws would NOT have removed the gun from this persons hand. It would NOT have changed the reasons why he gunned down so many people.

He did NOT shoot a bunch of people because gun laws are too strict. Relaxing the laws would have had absolutely no effect on this, except someone would probably have gotten arrested for shooting this guy afterwards IF they could, which i fully believe they couldn't as he was driving around shooting random people.

Ridiculous statement.

We have strict gun laws and we have maybe one mass shooting per decade.

AMERICA has relaxed gun laws.. how many shootings do they have again? Oh yeah. Loads.

Making the laws stricter or not probably has nothing to do in this shooting. I highly doubt Derrick bought his guns legally. More than likely he bought them through an illegal arms dealer.
Forcing stricter laws will just push more people to buy illegal guns thus causing more problems.

America has problems because youths in poor areas think being in a gang is cool. I bet at least 80% of all gun crimes have occurred through illegal weapons being bought

Where do you live. There are shootings occurring all over the world as we speak some shooting may not reach headlines thus the belief that you have less gun crimes

If it was legal for the first person the guy shot to carry a gun (or even a taser) with him, the massacre would have stopped there. Guns will always fall into hands of evil, and our government renders its citizens defenseless.
Most statistics point in that direction as well: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_politi ... d_Gun_Laws

Kirisute Gomen, there is also evidence to support gun control. Norway has one of the lowest homicide rates in the world, and the police there don't even carry guns. The United States also has more than two times as many homicides per capita as the UK.

True, I didn't deny that either. Evidence points both ways. In the US it seems the crime rate goes up when there is more gun control, while in some of Europe, it is the opposite.

The reason idiots like him carry guns is because people seem to think that they can bend the second amendment.
It states:
The right to bear arms, under a well controlled militia.
It doesn't say that
"A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

Nevertheless, the US Constitution doesn't apply to other countries.
