Gunman Shoots 12 dead today!

I may be very naive on this one OK, but it really isn't like the Bronx over here, I never ever go out of my front door and worry about getting, shot, knifed, mugged, jumped, happy slapped or raped. OK maybe very late at night I would be more wary of being kidnapped and murdered maybe?

I live in an industrial city where drugs and alcohol, unemployment and poverty are a huge problem but it simply is NOT a scary place to be, we do NOT live in a vigilante society. If a gunman was to start shooting at random and the general public all had firearms there would be one hell of a risk of getting caught up in the crossfire....how many of those said civilians would be actually capable of firing a gun straight and true without nerves or panic? I'd rather take my chances with the lone gunman thank you. Can you imagine all those druggies and alcoholics waving a gun around?

I don't know for sure, but I highly doubt they would be waving their guns around if they knew the civilians around them had the same weapons.

Also...

I'd rather take my chances with the lone gunman thank you.

----------------------------------------------

I still want those who live in the uk to answer my question though...

Explain to me how being defenseless and relying on the respond time of the police is a practical way of life overthere?

----------------------------------------------

Also, I would defend ANYONE if I was ever a bystanderd during an attempted massacur such as this, you guys included, no one deserves to have their human right to defend themselves to be stripped away by a government and a maniac such as this suspect.

It would be like a gun fight at the OK Coral

Seriously, you don't know some of the d**kheads we have over here, they'd be deadly with a skipping rope! Most don't even have enough brains to blow their eyebrows apart!

I am from the UK......the above reason is why I would prefer to leave it to the trained law enforcement officers.......and many people did try to help yesterday as this was taking place, but by looking after the dead and injured. The gunman wasn't captured, he did as they all do and turned the gun on himself.

Hey I've been their you know 😛

We have tons of those Corals here still, and they still have mock shootouts, and TRAIN RIDES!!! 😎

but seriously, how would one defend themselves there during an attempted shooting spree?

In this case the police and locals sent out warnings for people to lock themselves inside as much as they could, 6 helicopters and many ground crews were instantly called, here we have what's called the RRU the Rapid Response Unit, in a matter of serious emergency the police, fire brigade, ambulances etc can be on a scene within minutes. Even in small towns and cities we have a full police force in operation, where there are limited resources, neighbouring towns and cities and even counties will also help out.

Most witnesses who were unharmed said that they simply ducked down out of the way, ran indoors, hid behind stuff, the majority of the victims did not have this choice however as the gunman shot at point blank range and in one case shouted an elderly woman over to his car and shot her (she must have thought he needed help).

Okok, that is new info for me, the rru, etc... 😎

However, I will continue to defend the human right of self defense. :great:

Yep. Go ahead and continue being a part of the problem.

That comment is immature and unprofesional for a staff member.

I might as well ask, *sigh*

How is that being a part of the problem?

You're glorifying having a gun. If more people have guns, then there is going to be more gun crime.

And you know this how?

Its laughable sometimes when some of you bring up issues that were discussed pages back.

Go and re-read some of my posts which answers your question so I don't have to conitinue to re post myself.

And there will be more end to gun crime.

Contrary to liberal belief, gun ownership doesn't mean the owner is a neo-Nazi out to kill everybody. Sport, hunting, and self defense are reasons to own guns.

If all of our civvies had guns to stop Bird, and owned the guns purely for self defense purposes.. How many do you think would have practiced and trained with the gun enough to be a good enough shot to be confident of hitting their target?

They wouldn't want to get close enough, because he'd turn around and go for them. They wouldn't be too far away cuz they'd never hit him. So they'd have to put themselves in danger by getting into a position where they could hit him; because lets face it, for the average person who doesn't use a gun regularly, to get into a position where they could hit him, they have to clearly get into a position where he could hit them. Worth the risk for them personally?

Some people here seem to hold too much faith in the good nature of others. Survival instinct of human nature means that many people will look out for their own welfare. Why put yourself in extreme danger of being shot when you can just hide and let trained professionals deal with it?

Yes, UK Police have an 'RRU' (Named differently depending on county, in Merseyside our response team is just called 'Response', and our armed is Armed Response Vehicle/Unit (ARV/ARU)) which get there in a matter of minutes. I believe for firearms their target is to get to the incident in less than 5 minutes. But most importantly, when they arrive they have armour. Something which your regular civvie doesn't have.

And as stated before, even if having our civilians armed would have saved 11 of the 12 unfortunate victims of this atrocity, with the fact that everyones armed, giving people who have break downs more opportunity I'd estimate far more than 11 victims over the decade.. We'd lose more than we'd save in the long run. I'd rather lose 11 people, then wait 14 years (like last time) before losing a few more, rather than losing a few people each month..

I'd much rather we didn't lose any through incidents such as this..

It's a massive tragedy and I do hope that the reaction doesn't change the gun law in any way (it won't be made more relaxed, but I'm hoping it doesn't get more strict)

In general the guns that tend to be used for crime are illegal guns. And we already have a zero tolerance policy to guns on our streets, but the guns that ARE owned legally are, 99% of the time, only used for legal means.

You are never going to believe what I'm about to say.................

This morning in a strange and cruel twist of fate, a drive by shooting happened near to where I live.
I believe the person who was shot (In the leg by first reports luckily) is a close friend of my family.
I can't go into too much detail at this time as things are still very sketchy and I'm not sure which friend it actually was yet or how bad they are, I've only just learned it was them.

I knew it was happening at around 11am this morning when the helicopters were hovering, when I heard where it was I wondered if it was my friends as they had had serious trouble from someone last year and have only just been through the court system about it. They run a family business in town and tonight I was worried about them so I rang their restaurant, I got a recorded message saying they were closed due to an incident this morning.....now I know it was one of them 🙁

If you read back in this thread I said that this thing does not happen where I live......I stand by what I say and our streets really are safe, this type of thing is really really rare! It is just such a huge shock and coincidence that this as happened when I said it doesn't. I can 100% guarantee that the gun used in this incident was an illegal weapon but I can't go into more detail than that at this time.

All I can do is to be honest with you and admit it HAS happened and again nothing anyone around at the time, could have done, with a gun, would have stopped it.

I'm sorry Miss Take. Hopefully the person who was shot will be ok. 🙂

Thanks Logan so do I, I sent the family a text not long back but I don't expect to hear anything back under the circumstances, I'll let you know when I know a bit more. 🙂

Well too right he shot himself too, i say bring back the Death Penalty for people who do things like this.

MissTake, sorry for what happened to your family friend. I hope he(/she?) makes a recovery.

Why? So their problems just go away instead of rotting in prison for Lord knows how long?
