Trying to find the right theme is one of the major issues every owner of a forum has to overcome. Some owners would rather use a dark theme over a light theme, and vice-versa. However, the owner usually doesn't think about how bad/well it will affect their forum in the future. It has been confirmed that dark themes are most likely useful for miscellaneous-type forums such as gaming forums, music forums, etc. Statistics also state that light themes are most likely to be affective in great outcomes for decent-type forums like promotion forums, support forums, debate forums, and any forum category in that range. So basically, if you have a promotion forum, then it would be more efficient to use a light-colored theme. If you have a forum for gaming, it would be more likely that you would use a dark theme. I have also noticed that in all of my years of forum-constructing that many young users find dark themes very much more attractive than basic light themes, and that's probably why most gaming forums are based on a dark theme. It is also found that any miscellaneous forum would work well on either a dark theme or a light theme. However, it's obvious that if you have some kind of horror-related, death metal, etc forum, then you would most likely want to use a dark theme and some kind of black on red color scheme (considering it would look like a dark, bloody theme.)

Another thing that you users would might like to know is that the most professional and common look for forums is the light theme with a color scheme of white, light gray, and any color ranging from light blue to cyan to dark blue. You can see for yourself how attractive and professional a forum with a blue on white - light theme would appear by just taking a look at Forum Promotion. A theme with the color scheme similar to or around Forum Promotion's is basically one of the most perfect type of theme/scheme to use for a decent/professional forum.

Anyway, I hope this information will help some of you guys decide what kind of theme to use on your forum. Again, most professional forums are basically more appealing on a light theme. However, professional miscellaneous forums are basically more appealing on a dark theme; but most-likely, miscellaneous forums would work well on either a dark or light theme.

I tend to like the lighter themes but I agree that a dark theme is almost a requirement on a gaming forum. I have a skin selector box on my forum so members can select their own theme. The black theme is actually quite popular.

I think when I go to a forum with a dark skin, I feel it is harder to post for some reason, because a light theme is better on the eyes.

Same here; and that's why I stick to my light themes. 😀

On any forum I have made I try to have more then one theme/skin for the sake of people having choice.

Normally my default skin is a dark skin though.

I prefer dark skins at night and light skins during the day, as light skins that Administrators seem to choose are blindingly white.

I like lighter themes cause they don't look as depressing as dark skins. xD It's something stupid but that's what it means to me, lmao.

I prefer dark skins because they're easier on the eye and basically a dark skin matches my forums topic.

Light skins hurt my eyes and I just find white text on black easier to read that black text on white 🙂

I'm not saying that this is true, but I do believe the older that you get, the more fond you become with lighter themes.

I don't like dark themes (like pitch black) and I run a video game forum. They make forums feel and look secluded, imo. If that's what's you're going for, then fine. But for me, I prefer the lighter, more welcoming kind of styles. Not TOO light, but light enough.

Anyone else like this information or find it useful?

I like skins that are a mixture of dark and light =] But I have a gaming forum so like you said Dark is better lol.

Light themes with a dark background is always nice. I prefer lighter websites, I feel more comfortable with them.

I much prefer lighter skins ...... if I go into a Forum that is black with white/bright green/yellow Fonts it puts me right off personally - I exit quickly.

I like having the option of both so I can switch between them, but I usually don't mind if it's dark or light, as long as it's readable ^_^

Nice info 🙂

I much prefer lighter skins. A dark background color is okay, like here at Forum Promotion, but the actual content has to be dark text on a light background or I usually won't even bother to read it. If, heaven forbid, somebody has dark text on a dark background, it's an instant back click. My eyes are bad enough already. 🙂
