How do you feel about Admin Approval?

I do not like admin approving all accounts manually, how can he tell someone is spammer just by email and username

I use it on a few forums to mitigate spammers.

It's fairly effective.

However, as you mentioned from the inactive admins, you do have to make sure you check it when you can or get alerts with new members join so you can screen and onboard them in.

I might take advantage of a tip from a member on my AAF community about adding word filters for new members under a certain amount of post counts.

Then it can be immediate registration and I can let the filter mitigate the spam for me.

Shawn is right, you need to be extra active and be able to approve accounts ASAP, so that you don't deter good members for joining. I don't use admin approval, have used it in the past. Will probably find a solution to implement a better Captcha option and some required fields, maybe invest money in an anti-spam plugin, if needed, as I am not always 100% active and would rather invest the time in my regular client work.

The last person I approved on admin approval was you LOL ironic. 😀

But yeah I agree. I want to get away from admin approval and to be honest, email. I don't like email confirmation because emails are not sent at times.

I’ve never used it other than if I’m getting hit with hundreds of spam sign ups - other than that I see no need. It can be very off putting for potential new members and doesn’t create the ‘welcome’ you’re looking for.

It was good for me to determine if a new member that just signed up is a human being or not (by IP lookups and email verifications), but now I don't do that anymore. Nowadays forums have become more robust on deterring spambots.

I would only enable it if I had a private forum or if I consistently had to deal with troublesome members who keep registering. I have no validation enabled on my board whatsoever and I've only had to ban 4 out of nearly 2000 members for spamming.

The only time I’ve ever turned this on, is when I was trying to figure out a solution to prevent spam before you find a set of solutions that work (captcha requirements, IP checks, and others).

Currently, I have email verification as a requirement and then I have some hard limits before you are allowed to post a photo or have any text with a link (if you try, the post/thread automatically goes onto moderation approval queues).
