How to make a blog...

I use blogger because I had a lot of trouble installing phpbb.

But I do have an account with hostmonster. So I might give that word press tutorial a try. Who know? Maybe it will help me get a lot more members for my forum. That would make me really happy.

It did take me a while to get phpBB installed first time and it can be a bit of trial and error but the only way you learn is to try it and if you mess it up you can just delete it and start again. Same goes for any other script.

Dont you agree though, Fowler, that every admin should know how todo it, and go through it atleast once? I feel every "real" admin should install it atleast once, just so they know how. To me the admin should know, or atleast appear to know everything about his/her site. After all, the admin is the person the other members look up to.

Definitely... I personally dislike it when people run forums expecting other people to do everything because they haven't got a clue how to install or update the software. Alot of the time it is because they are too lazy to learn and just want other people to do it.

Be careful who you call a "real admin" though. There is a lot more to being a good leader, besides installing a script and learning a few basics. Afterall how many dead inactive forums do you see on both invisionfree and a phpbb board? ~wink~

Part of being a good leader is being active among other things. That's my opinion on the matter. Yeah you might know a few more things about a phpbb board, but if you don't go the extra mile to promote yourself, what good are you to your community? Or if you are just a horrible and uninteresting person, who's going to come back and check on your forum? These are just some examples of the crap I've seen on communities with knowledgeable admin's, who didn't know squat about being a good leader.

There's a lot of things to take into consideration here. Coding isn't everything, but I agree it is important. For the record I'm far from a lazy admin and look at my own community. Everyone needs to start out somewhere, so don't knock the service free forums provide. Some people just can't afford hosting for a simple hobby. It's not all about earning a living on the computer, sometimes it's a creative outlet.

Your in Junior high or whatever? And haven't learned stuff like this yet? (not installing but general computer should have learned stuff like this)

damn I'm a in my last couple years of High School and are learning advanced javascripting html coding and editing c++ programs and such...

Although installing a blog/forum can be a bit confusing at first, you'll learn fast.

I remember having a friend install phpBB2 for me about a year and a half ago, but I learned quickly how to install it.

Now I can install phpBB3 in under 2 minutes.

Were you talking to me? I really hope not.

Take it to private messages if you want to get confrontational pal.

Im in my second year in high school, and dont knock what I dont know, because my school only offers a few extremly basic (first grade stuff...like word proccessing) computer courses. Im self taught completly, I had no choice. That could be why I expect alot more out of people, because I know most can do it if they wanted to enough.

I agree with roleplaying about the leader part as well. For some reason, which I have never known, people do look up to me. Of course not everyone, but people for the most part. Its not always about what you know, but how you present the stuff you do know.

Personally, I like free hosts, although I tell as many people as possible not to use them long term. Theyre good for practicing coding, getting to know software, ect. Once youre ready to start a forum you feel could be large, then its a good idea to find a free webhost with MySQL and ftp access, because you will need more control the larger you get.

It's not all about earning a living on the computer, sometimes it's a creative outlet.
Different people have their own reasons, thats very true. Mine is to learn as much as I can, because I do plan to persue a web based career in my life. Others may only be doing it as an outlet, or just as a hobby. For people like me though, its important you learn everything you can, its not so small of a world out there, and for everything you know someone else knows more -😉-

That is so true!

I agree that learning more about what you like to do is a wonderful thing. I wish you the best of luck with your site mate.
