If you had to make a new forum gain 1,000 active users in 72 hours how would you do it?

So this is a hypothetical question but let's say you started a new forum, how would you gain 1,000 active users within 72 hours (there are very bad consequences if you fail)?

You wouldn't be able to do so at least by the hands of any person. If someone could do it then they would have done so and bragged about it from one side of the net to the other then proceeded to write a book and sell it to whoever would be willing to pay for it and yes someone would buy it.

Theres people that have done it. There just has to be a lot of hype about the forums before the launch.

Example, a big gaming company is releasing official forums for their current biggest game.

Key word being company and not individual as I wouldn't be surprised if a company pulled it off as there would already be a lot of resources behind the project which could make it work so it wouldn't be all that noteworthy for a company to achieve it. The OP is worded with the thought of a single person having to pull it off alone at least that's the way I am reading it which is why I said it wasn't likely to be possible for a single person alone to do it.

Shouldn't be that hard if you running another fourm or more and just post and hope for the best that they move over. I wouldn't force it on the members. Like everything else your website has to be unique in such away for them to join.

Bots won't get pass the email activation.. PEACE

As Jordan pointed out, it's all about content. If there's enough interest, you can get thousands (not just one 1,000) users the first day.

One more thing to add would be the management of the forum. To handle such a massive influx of visitors, you'd really need to have a good hardware from your web host or server and capable management (staff).

But it all boils down to the content and interest.

I don't think content is the main thing, it depends more on who is on the forum as much as anything, if a celebrity of any sort gives you a free plug, then it's going to attract a lot of members in a few hours. If you have any friends from other communities, they are easy recruits too.

1,000 users in 72 hours isn't hard, several thousand posts of quality content however would be a struggle!

The only way to achieve such a goal is to make some hype before opening, this involves heavy marketing campaign. Hype can be achieved by different means, as it was mentioned already in this topic (really expected game release/celebrity on forum/etc).

Using paid posting services and making ads in webmaster forums, you could probably get 100+ active members but I don't think it would approach 1000 that quickly. In fact, it might only be around 100 or 150.

Pardon my skepticism but I don't think it is possible to get that much registrants in 3 days time. Maybe a few hundreds is more probabie if you have the full support of celebrities who are related to your forum's theme. Like a sports forum, getting Lebron James in the community will definitely create a hype and users will flock to your forum.

I’d have to face the consequences, because that’s impossible. Unless you did something crazy like offer $20 gift cards to the first 1000 members who signed up and bought a bunch of Facebook ads to let people know of the promotion.

You don't think I can write bots with an email account? Is that a challenge I hear?

People just coming in for money aren't good members, in some cases.

Yeah, they’ll just leave after they get their money.

why would you want to make bots up anyway? I mean they don't post they just make accounts..

Not necessarily, I could write them to flood the introductions section on a forum. And to annoy a forum owner of course 😛
