I am having a tough time deciding between IPB and vB.

IPB is monthly cost, so it's easier for my budget. vB cost $195 for the basic of basic packages..

Having a troubled time here.

I'd go with IPB against vB. I wouldn't prefer any of them though. vB would be the last forum software I'd go to.

Wait so if I do $9.99 a month for IPB I OWN the license?

No. You are able to use the license in the hosting. I wouldn't go for it.

I'll hold off the debate until IPB 3.2, so until then, I personally prefer XenForo over both.

This. Xenforo will end up beating both, so if you are planning on investing in a premium forum software, Xenforo is the way to go.

I'd say pick IPB.

vB is bloated and their developers aren't that great anymore. XF is pretty basic and doesnt have as many modifications/add-ons/features you'd get with IPB.

I agree with theezy. After seeing Wober, I knew to get IPB. His forum was so good, it was a deciding factor for me.

And yes, IPB is easy to use, lots of mod(cost a ton though), great free themes, and tons of built in features.

And vb's admin panel is TERRIBLE. I got a demo board, and after an hour I couldn't figure out how to add forums.

I would go with IPB. I used to be on staff at an IPB board and it was awesome! The mod and admin logs were fairly easy to get used to, too. I, however; have never been on staff at a vBulletin forum, so I can't give proper feedback on that.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Though you say that mods on IPB cost a ton??

Most mods on IPB are free. I have quite a few installed on my board and I think the only one I paid for was the moods.

So do you suggest paying monthly for a start for a small budget, or what?

Simple, use MyBB/phpBB3 and use that $140-$190 you would have invested into the forum software, instead, invest that back into the forum. $140-$190 is enough to get a forum off and successful, why use a premium software when you have the same software (possibly better) for free.

Furthermore, how can we ACCURATELY answer your question when we have no idea what your forum is about.

You are thinking too hard.

IPB. VB has ripped off a lot of people.

Maybe you're not thinking hard enough.

Depends really on your preference. I'd say IPB over vBulletin 4. vB 3.8 is great but it's starting to show it's age. Xenforo is also very good software 🙂

Explain how you're right. 🙂

How would you invest that back into the forum to make it successful? Paid advertising?

There are many ways, a simple posting contest that cost me $40 got me 7k posts in 3 days. I have my ways, which I've posted articles on.
