So what's the deal with so many people avoiding IPB forum software? I hardly ever see a board running on the software outside of sports forums I visit and a few others.

Is it the price? I've been using IPB for awhile now but I'm not the one who purchased the license for the software so I'm not even sure how much it runs for.

In my opinion its the best forum software available. So why don't people use it more?

Not everyone has the money and some people just prefer others, i, trying to save up for one... i currently have $0.06

6 cents, nice! You must be several hundred dollars off. So what's the current going price for a license.

I know that there are people with licenses that will host a board for a monthly fee. I used to pay $10/month to host on the newest IPB software.

Also, so many owners are willing to give away such big prizes for promotions and contest. Put the money into your software! Gift your users and potential users. Amirite?

i think the current price is $150 or something

It's cheaper than VB...logic says there would be more IPB forms than VB forums. But no.

IPB just isn't 'good'. I never felt it to be a professional software. Just me.

I love IPB, and im currently running it on my forums. I use it because it has features that phpbb, mybb need mods installed to have. I also see a lot of people saying "Its to hard to work out etc.." I also think not many people have IPB because of the fee of $150.

This is exactly is. IPB is becoming more common, but still isn't. It's still not common because most webmasters/users still feel uncomfortable with it because they haven't used it. This is changing though, IPB3 was a big release

No offense intended to anyone here, but demographics at Forum Promotion lean towards the free guys over the paid guys primarily due to budget. I bought a used license in 2007 with christmas PayPal money from my mom and still own it to this day.

Don't get me wrong, IPB is an excellent software. It has one of the best back-ends ever and their development team is very involved in the community and actually listens to our suggestions (that's mainly how they innovate). I can't stress how convenient their support team is, considering they'll fix all your problems for you in a matter of hours (and then tell you what they did so that if the problem arises once again, you can fix things yourself). That's what you get when you save money buying that over a vBulletin. Besides, Xenforo is likely going to put another dent into vBulletin.

Many people who can afford $150 aren't going to FP for primary advertising. They won't even need FP to promote their site, thus the "appearance" or "illusion" that there aren't many IPB forums. I know of a few large IPB forums, though.

Well go to the ipb support forum and check out all the people there asking for help with THEIR IPB forum. That should give you an estimation on how many IPB forums could be out there. 😛

Not every forum on the internet advertises here or mingles with this little tiny pocket of the web. The internet is a big place, start exploring. 😛

Despite that we see a much lower percentage of commercial forum software powered sites here at FP, I think there are still less IPB forums than other types for reasons I stated above

I've used the free version of IPB before it went under. And between that and some of the paid versions I've been on, it just doesn't feel very professional... like it would be good for a business forum or anything. If you wanted something more for your business forum, I'd recommend Vbulletin or PHPBB... PHPBB if you don't have the money.

Explain. Pure opinion doesn't sway anyone's minds.

If this was 2008, I'd say yeah, ok sure... But we're now in 2010, and vBulletin has gone completely and utterly downhill. vB 4.0.x wasn't even a full code change. phpBB hasn't changed much since '08 either, whereas MyBB and SMF both have. I really don't see what you are on about. Until XenoForo becomes available for public use, IPB has virtually no competition in the paid software market.

David and Theezy have hit the nail on the head here. If you have $150 to spare on your forum, you aren't going to be using a free advertising service like FP. Only one or two of the active members on my IPB forum come from FP, so you can see where my priorities lie here...

I don't think that's fair. If you know how to use FP well, it can be invaluable. Too many people here just think all they have to do is post a thread here and expect instant success though.

I agree with Jonathan on this one. I've recieved loads of help from FP in the past, and they've never failed to let me down. But when you're like me, and basically living from paycheck to paycheck, sometimes your best bet are promotion sites like FP, and if you can't afford software like VB, IPB, etc... then there are loads of free ones out there that will compensate your needs just as well.

What the heck is with me and big vocabulary words lately??
