Legal Adult Age?

Haven't posted here in a while..

Seems like Australia is alot more softer.

14: Work Part-Time (i think)
16: You can drive, Work Full Time and leave school
17: Considered as an adult when you break the law
18: Legal Adult, Can also drink alcohol and smoke tobacco

at 21 you get nothing new besides looking like a adult.

18 is the beginning of full adult hood here.

That's up to the discretion of the judge, severity of the crime, precedences, case law etc. You can be 14 and be treated as if you were an adult. You can be sent to an adult prison or a supermax if the situation warrants it.

In some states, they have raised the school leaving age to 17.

It is not necessarily softer. The culture is different to that of the US. There are obviously restrictions on owning and carrying firearms and other weapons. In some regards, a US citizen would find it hard to adjust to Australian law due to many restrictions in civil liberties. Australia does not have a Bill of Rights or a legal document outlining the Freedom of Speech - it is implied, but there is no clause in the constitution that enforces free speech. There are no miranda rights when dealing with the police, but police generally tell you your rights if the situation warrants it.

Not sure about the US or other countries, but ignorance of the law is not a defence - once you are 18 in Australia, you are expected to know the law.

Some may have changed since the last time I have heard. I think the reason why the age is 18 is because that’s when most people have left or are leaving school. So really that’s when you step in to adult live

I think you become an adult as soon as the law charges you as one. Then that's when you become a adult.

This in my opinion would be correct, as soon as you can be tried for an offence that would make you an adult, and I am pretty sure it depends on the offence you have committed and the judges mood of the day.

I don't think you can base it on the age of consumption of alcohol as lots of different countries have different rules on that, Germany 16, america 21. So there is a big difference, but the idea of being tried as an adult if you are minor is correct and that is the best way to gage what age you become an adult.

In the Philippines, we consider 18 as legal age for both boys and girls. But I heard in USA, it'll be called legal age until they're 21. That just proves that all of us has different beliefs. 🙂

I think they should raise the legal adult age in the USA to 25 😛 Maybe then I wouldn't had got away with the stuff I did around that age group >_<
