Do most people look down on new forums? like they are not active or the post counts very little.. etc..
I do think some people always looks down on new forums..

I have noticed this. They just give up because they don't get much activity. If they kept promoting then maybe they would get a good activity count.

My Promotion Forum has invented a solution for this.

I do not, they are new. Why prejudice them based on a post count?

I only look down on new forums if they assume they're the best, and talk crap about rival forums.

Every forum has potential, so no, I don't look down on new forums (unless they're free-hosted, which kind of contradicts what I'm saying, but whatever).

So you're saying you look down on freely hosted forums because they're 'free'? Why? Not everyone has the money for paid hosting.

Yep, you're correct.

Paid hosted forums > free host forums, anyday. It's rare that I see a brand new free hosted forum become successful. Admit it, most of them look absolutely terrible.

Um, that's not exactly fair. Most of us don't have money for advanced hosting and yes, there are advanced hosting sites that are free, but not everybody has patience to run a Cpanel hosted site. And yes, there are some hosts that thrive quite well with being on a free host.

Like one that started off on a free host and now has almost 3.50 K posts and over 5K members.

Honestly though Ashley, I understand if you are unemployed but if you have any income at all (yes including pocket money!) you should be able to pay 4-5$ a month in hosting. I've seen hosting plans for 3.50$ and less. And domains cost 11$ a year at most. If you care about your site you should just go and mow some lawns, seriously. I'm a poor student with no income bar what my parents choose to give me, yet I get by.

Ultimately if you show that you are willing so sacrifice some money to run your site then it shows that you take it seriously. I know that some people on free hosts do take their projects seriously - but they are submerged in a pit of others who set their forums up and leave within a month. Also, most administrators on free host forums that do care about their communities go on paid hosting as soon as they get a chance.

I certainly don't look down on newly created forums. I have paid for all of mine and I'm on a pension, it has been said that some free host sites have gone onto greatness while a lot fall by the wayside. I would also wager that a lot of paid for sites have done the same. In the end I think it's dedication that has to play the biggest part and the participation of friends or not helps greatly also. I myself have joined numerous smaller new starting out forums in a bid to help them get off the ground but have also been criticized for asking the same of mine.. Kinda makes one think seriously about what forum to help out now.

I don't look down on new forums, it's not like they will instantly be popular. but i can understand why some do because most want to be part of an active forum so that they will get fast answers. I will join any new forum that i belive i will like and has something that i am interested in.

If it is a new forum that isn't unique or has very little content, I will look down on it. If not, I will usually find some other reason to complain about it.

Yup, uniqueness is a huge problem. I hate seeing sites spring up with the exact same concept as my own and suddenly expect that they can become the next great writing forum by copying my site's concept - even my layout and colour scheme! Thankfully most of those sites wither and die within a month.

You know, I am employed, but that money goes to more important things. I can't shell out 20 bucks a month like some people can. I'm still living at home, and I'm on a shared computer. We are struggling with financing right now, so otherwise I probably would consider hosting. I'm thankful to even have a forum at the moment. Yes, I do care about my site, but I don't really like advanced hosting anyway, because I have no knowledge of Cpanel or anything.

I dont see how you can say most of you havent looked down on a new forum when you do, posting it here doesnt make you a better person...

I can completely understand your situation. Not everybody has money to spend on a website or something like that no matter how little it costs. Many young people (18-25) live paycheck to paycheck and have no healthcare, since they may still be in college or have just graduated.

The only way to avoid something like this is to get a specialized degree that is in high demand, such as pharmaceuticals.

Well I'm dead honest to say the least.

Off topic: We had considered college at one point, but my health problems have set me back, which is why I'm now working. Sorry about that, though.

It is fine if you dont have a domain, it is just a url. Some people don't even own a computer, so I wonder why 5 seconds more of typing is hard.

Your forums always looks good 🙂

Whoever would charge 20$ a month would be ripping you off, just so you know. For a site the size of chatting time I'd say 3-4$ would be about right. You'd still have a gigabyte unused space and you wouldn't scrape your bandwidth limit. On top of that there are coupons. Going by Hawkhost.com, you get 50% off your first payment. So going by the basic plan, 3.29$ x 12 = 39.48$ Divide that by two, 19.47$. So you'd be paying under 20 bucks a year, if you would take the paid hosting option.

I understand that you have financial difficulties, but then again so do a lot of people including my family. I lost my part time job in October. My mum lost her (fulltime) job and my dad's taken a pay cut over 10%... Not forgetting income levies etc. The government have now stated that they are going to cut his pay even further. No one has the same amount of money as they had two years ago, or even last year, for that matter. And about your Cpanel - I had no knowledge of it until last March. Didn't have a clue what the word ''hosting'' was until last December. C'mon, you are a smart girl! Don't be afraid to learn something new. I'd seriously suggest going and getting an account on a free web hosting site just to learn about it.

Oh and not forgetting P2H services. There are some seriously good P2H services like NovaHost. That gives you much more control than SMF For Free (or whoever you are using now) would give you.
