The only reason football isn't illegal today is because of its padding. If there was no padding there are arguments that suggest the sport would be illegal.
Rugby players get broken fingers, noses, etc., whereas football players break bones and have other major damages more frequently.
Imagine playing without padding - there would be many more deaths and irreversible injuries today as well.
That's not to say Rugby isn't a manly sport at all, because I think it is. It was extremely tiring when I played in high school overseas.
