Have any of you lovely people played around with it yet? It's still in an alpha stage and not to be used on a live board, but it's a huge step up from the 1.6 series. I honestly think that when 2.0 comes around, MyBB will SERIOUSLY become a competitor for even paid software like Xenforo and IPB. :O

You can download the most updated version here: https://github.com/mybb/mybb/archive/feature.zip

I was going to test this on localhost tonight. Is there anything that stands out in 1.8 that they don't have in 1.6?

Off the top of my head.
  • New theme (Apart)
  • MUCH faster.
  • jQuery is integrated by default.
  • CSS postbit buttons by default.
  • Overhauled Report Center (not quite finished yet)
  • New MyBB announcements portion of the ACP.
  • Gravatar support.
I'm hoping that we'll see more features as it gets closer to being released, but that's a few months away at the least.

It's a great development in the right direction, except the theme is absolutely aggravating.

I think it's a lot better than the previous default theme, don't you? Besides, who uses the default theme on a live board anyway? 😉

I played with it in my localhost here, and I didn't see all that much difference to MyBB 1.6.X.

Naturally; After a minute or 2, I gave up and went to work on my own sites.

Will 1.6 plugins work with it?.
They should, however it's not advised to use it on a working site.

I don't think the goal was to introduce tons of new features and make it much different from 1.6. They are planning that for 2.0 as its a rewrite of the software.

I'm aware of this. But I have my own software(s) I use on my sites.

Nothing has been changed as far as plugins, so I'll let you answer that. 🙂

Well put, Austin. It's just a simple overhaul with performance improvements. 2.0 is a long way off, keep that in mind guys.

I don't think jQuery's been implemented yet based on what I've seen, though I do know Tomm Moore (MyBB Lead Dev) has been working heavily with the big board guys (such as labrocca) to make MyBB run a lot faster, and that's been happening since Tomm took over. He's been doing a ridiculously good job speeding up MyBB.

hope the version 2 will be release this year. my forums uses mybb and I like it.

You'll be waiting a while. It is a few years away from being released.

I think it might be a bit sooner than a few years.

I've made a test forum for you guys if you wanted to play around with it. 🙂

Thank you for the test forum.

It still looks like crap! The logo even looks like it was made a Kindergartner. They really need help in the visual aspect.

I think it's one of the best default forum themes on a software. I quite like it. I also think the logo looks quite professional.

They don't really concentrate on the visual aspect. They want to build an excellent and secure forum software. not build a good looking one. That's why there are a ton of designers.

Latest estimate is 4 yrs.
The word is they want 2.0 to be an innovation, theres a rumour they will do away with their form of BBcode and use mark down, which I think is the wrong step to take, not many know how to use mark down, and converting to use as buttons could be a nightmare.

While this is true, I have only seen 1 or 2 visually appealing MyBB styles. That should say something about the themeing aspect of MyBB.
