MYBB or phpBB ?

It really comes done to preference in most areas.

they are both good but I prefer MyBB and consider it the more advanced and versatile of the two.

They both have there pro's and cons though. MyBB is relatively new in comparison and doesn't have as large a following.

this means fewer themes and mods for MyBB, however MyBB has several great mods I haven't seen with phpBB and the MyBB mods are often done better in my opinion.

You could always sign up for a free host that let's you install the software of your choice so you can try MyBB. (Free hosts aren't always bad but I haven't found one that isn't limited in some way and there is no need to pay for a test site, I wasn't trying to say use one or the other.)

I actually like both. I recently tried MyBB again after saying I hate it and I really like it. My favorite would be PhpBB though.

I'm a total MyBB addict. The point about the themes is a good one though. If you can't design/afford a custom theme then chances are your competition already have taken the best of the free ones.

MyBB mods are much easier to install though and the ACP layout is much friendlier. The last is just my opinion however.

and mine^ Anyways I highly suggest mybb,

A yes I know all about the board it is indeed the best of all. But expansive to. So you can get it at a price of $195 ? And also doing upgrades ?

And correct if I'm wrong, that's a yearly fee depending on the license you buy.

I agree that it's better but I don't think it's worth the cost.

MyBB's goal is to be comparable to vB, that's the league they are trying to reach. When the Open source community puts there mind to something... no commercial program can compete, it becomes a matter of time.

It's not just free as in beer but free as in freedom.

vB got rid of bbcode in vB 4. It's all WYSIWYG... It isn't a forum script anymore. It's just an expensive Social Networking script.

There is more to a forum than BBcode.

Or do you not mean [ img ] <---BBcoding and instead mean bulletin board source code?

I did mean bbcode. Like the text editor is all WYSIWYG now. This to me is plain disgusting. I know that it is one aspect, but I like having bbcode in my posts. I don't know why, I guess I was the same when they got rid of HTML posting. 🙁

I probably wouldn't like it either as I've never been a big fan of WYSIWYG in general but it's hard to say as that's coming from the coding side of things, with even basic HTML being more complicated than BBcode.

I can't imagine either, I think it would be hard to come up with something as flexible as BBcode while at the same time not slowing things down.

You should be able to enable HTML in posts in most software, you can't do that in vB?

I have it enabled on my board but I understand why it's not allowed on others as it can easily create problems.... So I'll just see how that goes..

I tried seeing if it just allowed HTML or was a free for all kind of thing so I decided to try a google ad in a signature and well... it executed but it really didn't do anything but mess up the layout so it's gone now.

I should have taken a closer look but it was late.

I have tried both and like both but if I needed to pick a favorite, it would be mybb.

phpBB has more features and has better MODs and styles, imo. But really it comes down to what you like more. I like phpBB's simplicity but also how it can let you do a lot of things if you know how. It's also very easy to customize, with styles and MODs readily available, and if you know a little coding, you can jump in and do it yourself. 🙂

As far as MyBB goes, I don't really like the skins it has. Other than that I have only used it for a short while and just don't overall like the features available and the way things are implemented. But it's not a bad forum software in its own regard.
