I'm sorry but where are you from? Where I come from it's called a job. You are responsible for saving your own money. I surely wont get free healthcare when I retire and I surely wont expect my former employer to take care of me. It's not the owners fault that the players seem unable to save money. How many of these millionaires are broke two years after they retire?Zenrer said:I love how the owners use them, push them to their limits for personal gain and then discard them when they retire, absolutely pathetic.
I'm actually from Australia, so I probably don't have much of an opinion on the matter, but why do the owners make these players play their hearts out, fight injuries, keep playing, and then just chuck them out like rubbish?Whaturmuva said:I'm sorry but where are you from? Exactly what I was about to add-on. Good example, Mark Stafford, took a play with a f*cked up left shoulder just to win the game for the Lions. What if he had been taken down hard, his spine also snapped and he was paralyzed for the rest of his life? He won the game for the Lions, not for personal glory, and for that he shouldn't be treated like dirt.Logan18 said:Whaturmuva said:I'm sorry but where are you from? Lets say that the players make 1.2 million dollars for three years in the NFL. Lets say that they get hurt after those three years. They've saved maybe half of that money. What if they were to be paralyzed and couldn't do anything for the rest of their life? They would never be able to get a job. Lets say that they spend all of the money they saved on medical bills. They now have no more money, can't get a job, and the owners aren't willing to pay for the medical bills. You think that the player is the one at fault?
They don't. These players can pick any career path and this is what they chose. If you ask me anyone playing a game for a living shouldn't make ten million dollars a year, but that's another story.Zenrer said:I'm actually from Australia, so I probably don't have much of an opinion on the matter, but why do the owners make these players play their hearts out, fight injuries, keep playing, and then just chuck them out like rubbish?
I'm not saying the owners shouldn't help with injuries that are acquired on the job. Companies should have injury insurance, but this still does not excuse the reckless spending these players do. Had they been investing their money instead of blowing it on toys maybe they would have much more saved for medical bills. I couldn't even find a way to spend a much money as these players do.

-- Thu Jun 23, 2011 10:13 pm --

Logan18 said:Lets say that the players make 1.2 million dollars for three years in the NFL. These players are playing due to their drive to win. Many have ignored the team medics during games and walked back out on the field injured only to be injured further. They know the risks in playing the game and made the choice to do so. No one is forcing them out there and they could have chosen a different career path and can retire any time they feel like it.Zenrer said:Exactly what I was about to add-on. MrJohn said:This is the way that I look at it. Baseball players make about one fifth of what NFL players make, yet you never hear of baseball players asking for more. I think the players are getting greedy. They are among the highest paid athletes in the world.
Football players make enough money to retire by age 40, they don't need any help "getting on" with their life.Zenrer said:and the money they are fighting for is to help them get on with their life after they retire.
What if they get seriously injured, and thats the reason their career ended? Not all football players play a huge amount of years, and if someone does get seriously injured representing their team, you would think their would be some sort of support.Hobbies230 said:Football players make enough money to retire by age 40, they don't need any help "getting on" with their life.Zenrer said:and the money they are fighting for is to help them get on with their life after they retire.
When you said retire, I assumed you meant because of age or some other voluntary reason, not because of a career-ending injury.Zenrer said:What if they get seriously injured, and thats the reason their career ended?
