Piracy is a joke. Unfortunately, it isn't the funny one.
Definition of Piracy: Copyright infringement (or copyright violation) is the unauthorized use of material that is covered by copyright law, in a manner that violates one of the copyright owner's exclusive rights, such as the right to reproduce or perform the copyrighted work, or to make derivative works.
Reproduction of one's creations. Anything digital can be copied or manipulated. Anything man has created, another man can destroy or make a replica of. Consider this: When you listen to a song, after about 5 times, you can usually repeat the song in your head. You have just committed piracy. The song has been copied into your head. Who is to say that that is legal, but copying it in physical form is not?
Also, it is so hard to track something that has been copied in digital form. As many of you know, you can mask a file as say, a text file, or a jpg file. How can they monitor this and limit it? In order to actually stop piracy, they would have to shut off the internet globally, which would drastically dent evolution. Even if they did that, they would still have piracy because many people have computers and can copy discs at will, pending they have the programs to do so.
In a sense, the government would have to go to every single house in the country and take every computer, every tape dubber, every dvd copier, every VCR, every pen, anything that can be used to copy another piece of data, and do what with it? Surely, if they keep it, people would retaliate. They would have to hide it or destroy it.
Stopping piracy is pointless. Restrictions on digital media only affect the user who buys it, not the user who pirates it. IMO, I don't think piracy will ever stop unless the government just ignores it, and pretty much lets them do it. Eventually it will get boring and people will want the original copy of things more if they don't get restrictions on it. DVD's are pretty much useless. When they first came out, they were so nice. You could go through little mazes on the menu. Now they are filled with junk and previews that you are forced to watch that it is pointless to even buy them.
