The Reverend Terry Jones of Gainesville, Florida is bent on burning more than 200 copies of the Qur'an on Saturday (September 11, 2010). He is defying world criticism not only from his arch nemesis, the Muslims, but also the Vatican and U.S. public officials. The media have also contributed to giving this leader of a tiny American Christian sect more attention than he deserves. Read more...

Eh. He owns the Korans, they are his private property. Even though I think he's being provocative, it is his right to burn them (unless local laws stop him - you can't burn tires in most places after all). If some people burned 200 bibles, I wouldn't lose half a minute's sleep over it. why? Because a bible is just paper - if you buy 200 bibles which were printed in a factory and burn them, then it's our time you are wasting. The book isn't being censored, someone is just making a provocative move against the material printed version of the words.

It's just sad. I'd like to hurt him, but he's really not doing anything illegal.

People are so ignorant.

That's the problem. Why don't you just not care? You are saying you want to commit VIOLENCE against him. You are just as bad as the terrorists.

I'm not killing anyone or blowing up buildings.

I don't just not care because it's not right on so many levels.

And? How does it effect you? Also, if you are a Christian, then what about this: If someone burned 200 bibles on their property in a different state, then how would that affect you and why should you care? I think it's dumb and provocative, but honestly, I don't care.

I'm not a Christian. That would bother me too. There is no reason to destroy holy books because a few people in a religion of billions of people killed thousands of people. It's ignorant. A few Muslims killed Americans, so I hate all Muslims. That's the attitude people like this man have.

What's ironic is that he is a man of God. This wouldn't really go down as something good.

You are giving reasons why he is a fool, not why you should care about it enough to commit acts of violence against him.

Not necessarily violence, but I'd like to stop him by any means necessary.

I know it's a stretch, but it's true that troops can be endangered by this. Especially when we are so close to peace talks with several Middle Eastern countries.

Another reason why he is a fool and why our president should stand up and denounce him as such if he feels that it is needed for diplomacy. However, I am not sure exactly how it equates to "hurting him" in your mind. You are an atheist, I believe? Why should you care. aren't you above the squabbles of religious zealots?

I never said I was above the squabbles of religious beliefs. Just because I don't choose to follow that religion doesn't mean I don't respect that religion.

I think it would have been a good idea for the media to not have reported it all over the place. They all oppose the idea, so why spread the word?

Seconded. If it's true that this guy is threatening national security, it's also true that the media has made it into an issue.

This statement has so many flaws on so many levels.

1. the terrorists at 9/11 were not Islamic; they were Islamists (note the difference in spelling). Islamists are extremists who not only believe Islam as a religion, but also a political system, hence your statement is incorrect in jumping to the conclusion that the Islamists at 9/11 are the same as my Muslim friend.

2. You just said: I'd like to hurt him, but he's really not doing anything illegal.. How does violence solve violence? In Avatar, Colonel Miles Quaritch decides to use terror on terror, yet they end up losing 😛 But the point is, you can't go and make a statement like such, yet conclude that "people are ignorant".

In a general view, he isn't doing anything wrong or illegal. It may be unnecessary, but he is sending a message as a Christian that he doesn't believe in the practice of Islam and it should be removed from society. Even world renowned Christian theologians dislike the practice of Islam, yet nothing can really be done for having such an opinion. Even world law is bounded by religion, namely objective moral beliefs, otherwise killings others isn't grouped into good bad, just an objective action.

I wouldn't participate, if I was given the chance, but I wouldn't attempt to stop such a civil attack. People aren't going to be physically injured; emotionally (although this is by choice) yes, but physically no.

The guy's a complete and utter tool. That's about all I have to say on the matter. If he wants to burn them, then he can, but you'd like to think that in this day and age he could be slightly more multi-national.

It's a shame that the people who pay will be the ones not associated in any way.

I just wish no one would burn any books in the united states. It's unamerican. They can do it, but it's still a very disgusting symbol of censorship.

Well said. It reminds me of a certain incident around the 1930's and early 1940's, to be honest.

You're joking, right?

I think what the guy's doing is wrong, but he has the right to do so.
*Except if there are local burn notices. If his area was in a severe drought, the fire could spread.

To put it on a worldly perspective, the real issue isn't the guy burning books; it's the media spreading the news around that he is burning books. Remove the media and we wouldn't even be talking about it because we wouldn't know anything about it. Because it's such a "sensitive" topic, the media believes they have an obligation to spread it around the world, and so if anyone is endangering anyone, it would be the media. They could have left him alone, and barely anyone outside of Gainesville, Florida would know what his is doing. With the added tensions of the media, the world now knows, and therefore any responses to his actions is as a result of the media spreading the word.

Not some of the bigger threats to us, but we are starting to get on good terms with some of the smaller countries out there.
