phpBB 3.0.9 released!

Why would you not upgrade to the latest release? There could be security updates in the new release.

If I was on phpbb my forum would have been updated the second I found out about it.

Maybe because its not as easier to upgrade as other forum softwares, especially the modified ones.

And it weird, that they deny support over not upgrading to minor releases.

I have updated and just got 1 error: I had about 20 mods installed.

But surely it is best to keep your forum updated?

For a minor release I wouldn't expect any major code changes that would affect any modifications. They could do a test upgrade on local first.

If you are waiting for 3.1 you could be in for a long wait. There's normally 6-9 months between releases, 3.1 probably wont be released until next year sometime.

Yea. I don't use phpBB anymore anyways. I think there will be a 3.0.10 release even before 3.1. 🙁 So it may even be longer!

Yes, updating to the latest version of phpBB is hard and can sometimes be hazardous, depending on what all you've got going on on your forum.

For instance, we have loads of mods installed on Chatting Time, everything from the important ones like spam mods, down to the not so important ones like the arcade mod, so updating at this stage would be a nightmare because there is so much to do between upgrades, and really, when it's only minor fixes, sometimes it's better to wait till the next release. In fact, I don't even recall SMF or MyBB having this much trouble, but then, their mods are a plugin and play system, that's why. Also, on phpBB, when you go to re add any mods you've installed the first time, this also comes with the torturous task of editing the template, and sometimes even finding new styles all together. I remember being very impatient when 3.0.8 came out not long after the emergency release of 3.0.7, because I was dying to see some of the new features it had, and more than anything, I was anxious to get back into posting and promoting, which is just what I was doing when we found out that 3.0.8 was out already. phpBB can be quite the hassle, but the huge reason I love it despite the hard work is all the awesome mods and themes you can get for it. The pain in the rear end job is updating all styles/themes/mods whatever when the new release comes out, especially if there are major changes.

And as for all the mods we have on Chatting Time, I have to admit it's starting to resemble a very cheaply made Vbulletin forum. I remember my tech-administrators old forum being the same way. One of those things where it's funny but at the same time it's not.

Wow Ashley. That is why when I had my forum I didn't install any MODs at all . I knew if I installed tons I'd have problems and instead to make it easy on myself I just didn't install any. The update would go so smoothly!

I thought of that, as that would make changing skins and stuff so much easier. However, when you get requests that even you and your staff team think is a good idea, how can you even refuse? Also, some of the mods we have are an absolute must, such as the anti-spam ACP mod as well as a couple other security features we had. If I did have an option to narrow it down, I would only leave the Quick Reply and the anti-spam mods. As I said over a year ago, forums don't have to have all the bells and whistles to make it a success, mods like the arcade are more of a want than a need.

Yea I completely agree. All you need is security which makes your members feel safe and functionality of the forum. An arcade really isn't needed for a forum it even kills the activity just like the mChat.

Though phpBB has a lot of hassle like this, its the best way to learn Forum administration.

When you start up with easier things like MyBB, you won't get much chance of learning, and fighting with bugs.

Exactly what I was saying too.

Agreed. We are a laid back community, more laid back than most forums of my type of genera, but on the same hand, I care more about the safety of my members than have them running around like chickens with their heads cut off. Because without the security measures, we'd probably be up to our eyeballs in PMs and emails with complaints about accounts being compromised. Because these days, while having a good strong password is still a rule of thumb, we want to be sure that they are more protected than just by changing passwords. Especially since certain times of the year it seems to be open scamming/hacking season.

Ya I hated PHPBB when I used it as it was a huge pain too install plugins and such. But now looking back it has really helped me know more about forums and I can do alot of manual code editing on WBB then I could have before using PHPBB , but I do aggree you should keep it updated as much as possible

For you Master it would be an easy error. Just run what it says in phpadmin and it's good to go.

I have just updated my local version of FP and it updated in a few minutes without issue. We tend to upgrade soon after a release but not immediately incase there is any issues that show up when more and more people attempt the upgrade. I will probably update the live forum Thursday.

It is always best to use the most upto date version. Even if the latest version is only bug fixes, it is still better to use the latest version and it is will be easier to upgrade if a security issue is found if you use the latest version. Jumping 2 versions (3.0.7 to 3.0.9 for example) has the potential to cause more issues then upgrading from the previous version to the latest.

Good to be careful. You never know when you'll have to upgrade to RC1.

They'll come up with something new as soon as they know people have updated.

@Fluffy hmm I tried this:

Code:
ALTER TABLE ‘alvt_bbcodes‘ CHANGE ‘bbcode_id‘ ‘bbcode_id‘ smallint(4) UNSIGNED DEFAULT '0' NOT NULL

It didn't work.

I'm not even going to try helping you as I ended up destroying FC. That's why we're on MyBB now.
