Yeah, some forums are free or not free and paid

XenForo blows phpBB away.

As far as I know, phpBB is actually kind of a pain in the ass to modify/use plugins. Although I'm sure the community/availability of those plugins is probably more available on phpBB... Though it seems like XenForo, out of the box, comes with a hell of a lot more functionality to begin with.

But XenForo isn't free. Actually, all the complaints on phpBB are why I chose MyBB. Honestly, I think as a general rule, a premium forum software like XenForo will probably serve you better than free versions. Luckily, it's usually easy to transfer things over once your community grows larger. As for MyBB, check my site (in my signature) for what it can do with just a few plugins and so on.

If your looking for a free forum software i'd say go with Mybb phpBB isn't that great. Xenforo is light years better than phpBB but as stated it isn't free.

XenForo is my least favorite forum software by far. It takes me forever to figure out how to do anything. phpBB seems a lot more simplistic and user-friendly.

I'm the opposite. XenForo's interface makes sense, phpBB is odd.

well, you expect it be since paid you willing to see something good out of it. and free versions are free and I tend to not expect to see high good content

enForo is my least favorite forum software by far
then play with IPB

If i had to choose a paid software im going with Woltlabs Burning Board

What do you like about Burning Board? I've never used it before, and honestly, I've really never participated in forums that use it much. I don't really know anything about it.

Well aside from how beautiful to the eye it is, I love using burning board because of how easy it is to use, It has lots of plugins that can be installed manually or automatically. I love simplicity and thats what Burning Board is. Although i like using BB4 over any other version it just suits my style.

I find xenforo to be rather cluttered. I do prefer phpbb for the simplicity, xenforo for the options. It really depends on the type of forum and end user engagement.

no one has given reasons why the prefer xenforo over phpbb or ipb.

Spam seems to be difficult to control on phpBB, hence, why I have XenForo. Nonetheless, though, I did go thru long stretches of time where I avoided spam on phpBB by using questions as a spam-fighting technique. However, though, possibly things went under with my forums because I didn't change the questions or try a new method.

Also, the URL scheme of phpBB isn't SEO friendly - unless you buy that SEO magic mod for 20 to 40 dollars, something like that. Also, there is a free URL rewrite mod, but it might not work with the latest version.

Oh, by the way, the main things I hate about free forum software is that there are little quarks I've seen on them that can be major problems for visitors. For instance, on one phpBB forum when you quote, the name of who you quoted isn't mentioned. Also, on MyBB and phpBB, you have to edit a post to get the spacing correct. Otherwise, paragraphs won't break (MyBB) or words are too close to quotes.

IPB also has the best of the best spam system 🙂

Can you point me to a large board using it? I'd like to see it running in the wild on a big or successful forum.

How can we compare a free and a paid version?
Xenforo is better because it is a paid version and more support. I used both these forum cms but must admit XF now is a good forum flatform with more good themes and addons.

Free forum software doesn't stink. It works well for people involved in it - and if there are little problems, they can normally be fixed with plugins. However, though, for people who want things more "out of the box", a paid solution is often the best. Also, they might just like the themes for paid forum software (but that could also be a reason for liking the free stuff).
