I currently have a dead forum and I am wondering if I should convert the mybb over to phpbb and just restart. We haven't got very far and I've noticed that more features are available for use with phpbb. What should I do?

I just tried Phpbb again yesterday, funnily enough. I had a go and kept an open mind. I like how themes work on phpbb, really easy to install a theme and you have a great selection. However, modifications are a real issue. 😛

Yes thats the real issue with phpbb. Mybb plugins are really to use and they work with almost any theme.

Have you thought about using Vanilla or SMF? They are both alternatives to Mybb...

I've tried SMF and I didn't really like it. As for Vanilla, I don't think it suits my needs. If I could get IPB or vBulletin, I would take that over anything else.

The Manual Installing and updating of ALOT of code.

How exactly are phpBB mods an issue? Explain please.
If you are trying to install a mod, most of the time it screws up and sometimes its not compatitble with some themes. I mean if you know how to code then it shouldn't be a problem because you know what each line of code means and such.

I've been using phpBB off and on since 2008 and I just love it! I like the nice layout, the nice themes to be offered, everything! It's just great overall and I can't see myself using anything else.

Here is my answer, I never tried phpbb, but heard form other users it is not secure and can be easily hacked. phpbb had great themes compared to mybb, but I love only Mybb. Even forum promotion runs on phpbb, dont know whether it is coded again.
I currently had one with Mybb and VB forums.

Forum Promotion is running on Phpbb not Mybb. 😉

You should use the software that you are the most comfortable with it. My personal opinion is that you should stick with MyBB because it is easier to work with and is safer. However, I do agree that phpBB has better themes, but that does not mean MyBB does not have beautiful themes.

I currently use SMF, and no real issues. Why is their a distaste towards it?

To me one of the major negative side about SMF is trying to find a good looking theme that does not look too “boxy”.

These guys create awesome SMF themes: dzinerstudio.com

Sorry I wrote by mistake instead of Phpbb, ill edit the above post now.

Before anything, I think you should ask yourself a few questions...

- What does switching software really gain you?
(How many features, that you'll actually use, will you gain? Versus how many features, that you used, from MyBB wil you lose? And how many features, from either software, can be replicated? So if you stick with MyBB can the features you want from phpBB be implemented through a mod?)

- How much work will it be to switch?
(I don't know if you're planning to convert database or just start over, but if you're going to convert... Have you ever done a database conversion before? Have you ever used phpBB before? If not I suggest setting up a test forum and just trying the software out. There's no point is transferring everything over only to find out you don't like how phpBB's ACP is set up or that installing mods is too complicated.)

- Why did your forum die in the first place?
(Because honestly if you don't figure out why this happened to begin with then the same thing will likely happen with your newly rebooted/remade forum even if it did change software. The quote "those who forget history are doomed to repeat it" comes to mind.)

I don't mean that you shouldn't switch. I just think you should be sure that switching will really benefit and be the best for you so that you don't waste time and effort doing something that won't make you happy and won't help your forum at all.

Features is what made me work with general discussion as well as go for ProphpBB's free plan. I had a general chat forum before where we had a ton of mods to the point where we could've just as well had a seriously bloated Vbulletin or Xenforo forum. We added all these features that we got requests for and stuff because we thought they sounded good, but looking back it wasn't such a hot idea after all, because if anything, only a few (if even that) features actually got used, so we ended up deleting a lot of crap. This is why I prefer free hosting in the first place, because for one thing, you're not tempted to add a ton of unused mods, and for a niche like mine, you don't really need that much to begin with!
