I use User Activation, and if they don't activate in about a week then they get deleted. A week is long enough I think.

I have no real official form of validation, but I have a system that 100% blocks all bots, and is of no hassle to an actual person..

That's a very interesting system. Is that used on the IPB forum in your sig?

Are all your new members happy to post a new intro thread?

Yeah, I use it on Forum Nintendo, and haven't had any complaints.

I don't have any strict posting guidelines for the intro threads... typically, new members basically say "I was looking for a nintendo forum on google, and this was top on the list" - or something similar 😛 Occasionally, we get people that write a lot more than that (and those specific members usually stay around and remain active.)

As for forcing new members to post once introducing themselves... It's a forum. If you aren't going to post and just want to read, why register? 😛

My registration system also has some unintended benefits, one being it gives the user an impression of how active the forum is. On FN specifically, I'd say its rare for a new member to not be welcomed by some of the other members (in their intro thread) within the first half hour.

Another vote for email.

I would NEVER let anyone on the forum without registering first.

Thanks for that krushrpants, I might actually try some of those ideas on my business forum.

No activation is of course the ideal situation but because of Oliver and such, I have to have admin activation on and be careful whom I'm to let in.

1. I don't care about my forums, it backs up each hour so if I get "mass spambot" attacks im fine, also I don't get any spambots and it's been open for 2 monthsish now..

Don't let Oliver control your lives... It's like not going to the beach because there may be sharks...

At the end of the day there is a thing called backups.

How in the world do you do that?! *Wants to do this* (Maybe not every hour, but daily/weekly would be nice)

No activation, you can't even register on my forum. I think anonymous forums take away a lot of the hassle, as well as all users being treated the same way. If they want to, they can 'register' a kind of 'username' so that they can post under a name, without activation.

I use it in levels. Start at #1. If I see the people misuse my gift of freedom I change to #2 and if it still goes wrong it will be #3 for a while.

I believe the first three all have their necessities at different times.

(I still think 4 is just plain evil.)

Depends really. Maybe the forum owner just wants to keep a small group of people inside their site. It'd certainly be far easier for that one person to moderate, but it's certainly not good if he or she is planning mass-expansion.

Otherwise, I wouldn't see any problem with it.

I have it set up for administration as I can check the account first before the user signs in. 😀

I've done administration activation before, but that's too much hassle on my part, because you contstantly have to go in the ACP to see who's all registered an account and then you have to either activate them or deny them entrance. Email activation is easier because all users have to do is click on a link to activate an account and then they're in.
