I use User Activation, and if they don't activate in about a week then they get deleted. A week is long enough I think.

I don't have any strict posting guidelines for the intro threads... typically, new members basically say "I was looking for a nintendo forum on google, and this was top on the list" - or something similar 😛 Occasionally, we get people that write a lot more than that (and those specific members usually stay around and remain active.)
As for forcing new members to post once introducing themselves... It's a forum. If you aren't going to post and just want to read, why register? 😛
My registration system also has some unintended benefits, one being it gives the user an impression of how active the forum is. On FN specifically, I'd say its rare for a new member to not be welcomed by some of the other members (in their intro thread) within the first half hour.
1. I don't care about my forums, it backs up each hour so if I get "mass spambot" attacks im fine, also I don't get any spambots and it's been open for 2 monthsish now..

No activation, you can't even register on my forum. I think anonymous forums take away a lot of the hassle, as well as all users being treated the same way. If they want to, they can 'register' a kind of 'username' so that they can post under a name, without activation.

Depends really. Maybe the forum owner just wants to keep a small group of people inside their site. It'd certainly be far easier for that one person to moderate, but it's certainly not good if he or she is planning mass-expansion.
Otherwise, I wouldn't see any problem with it.

I've done administration activation before, but that's too much hassle on my part, because you contstantly have to go in the ACP to see who's all registered an account and then you have to either activate them or deny them entrance. Email activation is easier because all users have to do is click on a link to activate an account and then they're in.
