"Yes," I said. "I guess."
"You know what I say to people when I hear they're writing anti-war books?"
"No. What do you say, Harrison Starr?"
"I say, 'Why don't you write an anti-glacier book instead?'"

You can't stop things like racism, or war, by "banning" them. Tis an impossible task.
What exactly do you define as racism though?ItsZippy said:Having a law in place won't stop all racism completely. However, it shows a willingness of the state to oppose it, it presents a deterrent to people, it will support the rights of victims in a legal sense. Saying we won't make a law because it won't get rid of it all completely at once id ridiculous.
What right do you have not to be verbally abused? I could say all sorts of stuff that you might consider verbally abusive that has nothing to do with racism and is not agaisnt any law. I could say I think you are beyond your scope in this discussion and you could feel I am verbally abusing you but does that make it illegal or wrong? The worst part of censorship is (Admin edit)I have the right not to be physically or verbally abused.
No line could be drawn nor enforced. The government prosecuting people who say things offensive? Are you serious? How about prosecute anyone who talks negativly about the government? That doesnt sound like a step in the right direction. How about this...everyone who is so easily upset by the words of others can get a thicker skin and realize that person can think whatever they want but that doesnt change the way things are. Sticks and stones, right?I don't know where I'd draw the line, but one could be drawn. Perhaps anything that is meant to cause offence - each case can then be judged individually.

You can't say that having to draw a line means that the idea is fundamentally wrong. Just because it is hard to draw a line does not mean that a line should not be drawn. Repeatedly looking at the technicalities takes the focus off the important moral and social aspects of the debate.
Are you speaking morally or legally?Freedom of speech should come with responsibility, you shouldn't be allowed to say offensive things that are purposely meant to hurt or offend someone and think that everything is ok because you have freedom of speech.
What's wrong with saying nîgger? Us homies say it all the time.OBAMA said:So to those who support making racism illegal, do you support the rewriting of Mark Twain books with the n word in them?
No~Mark Twains book was a classic, and it is his book and his words. It would be like if someone took the Harry Potters books and rewrote the books (after she's dead) because they say the B word in them. Besides, it's very disrespectful to change what someone said and their work that they worked hard on without their permission. And really, it's not like the word is/was directly aimed towards someone in particular that was real and living now, so I'm not sure why they would even get that idea into their head to rewrite it (changing other things also besides just changing the N-word to 'slave' and "Injun Joe" to "Indian Joe" and "half-breed" to "half-blood.").OBAMA said:So to those who support making racism illegal, do you support the rewriting of Mark Twain books with the n word in them?
