Ive been a part time linux user for at least 3 years now and I have become very comfortable with the environment. Windows 7 is a OS that you really can't go "wow" about, because sure they do have a fancy taskbar and a wide variety of supported software. The thing is that windows 7 can simply be blown out of the water with a simple gtk theme and some compiz, but that is not the main reason Im switching.

Security: I currently have to run a bloated antivirus just to "feel" safe and there is still no way of being completely sure that Im not infected. Linux does have the ability to get viruses itself, but it has dramatically lower chance.

Open Source: Windows programs are almost completely closed source except the few opensource programs that do support windows. Having the ability of downloading a program knowing that it is completely free and I can almost do anything I want to it gives me extreme joy.

Gaming: I have an xbox360 for gaming, so why would I need the windows back end for gaming? There are also games designed for linux, so if I do get bored; I can always play some of those

Customization: Yes...windows can be customized with programs like rainmeter, windows blinds and themes by other people. Lets face it though, do I really want a program just to change a theme or just to get a fancy effect? Linux comes with almost everything you can desire...simple theme installer, badass interface ( Gnome, xfce, etc ) and you can't forget compiz 😉

Package Manager: Linux has more programs than you can count in one day ( or until you get bored ) and windows has the same. "Why is linux better"..lets see a package manager to find these programs easier while windows programs are one of those things you have to google this, google that.

Transmission: One of my favorite things that windows will never have. If you want to know what it is, google it. ( Supports only Linux and Mac )

These are only some of the reasons that Im switching to linux from windows 7. I will be backing up my laptops copy of windows 7 and leave its drivers partion if I ever wanted to switchback and as the distro goes Ill either be using Ubuntu 10.04 x64 or ubuntu 10.10 x64.

Ohh that's nice. Windows 7 is perfect for me. You might have gotten the wrong edition or something 😛

Haven't convinced me.

Same one I have 😛 It is still better than any OS I have used.

I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, there is no problems with that and if your unsure if you have viruses there are several ways to protect yourself with only a firewall and a good antivirus such as AVG or Antivir.

what ever "Linux" OS you get, don't know if your getting ubuntu or whatever, anyways as your saing Linux is much probebly the os with least viruses because it's plainly bad so no one uses it other then for servers.

There is always room for free programs when It comes to windows 😉

I been thinking about switching to a Linux Distro like Ubuntu, Linux Mint, etc as my main OS since my computer barely meets the minimum requirements for Windows 7, and I notice NTFS hard drive gets fragmented a lot which slows down boot up a little bit.

I agree with the antivirus, antispyware, antimalware, firewall, and many other programs to make Windows feel safe. It can get very overwhelming for me to make sure all of them are updated, and doing weekly scans take a lot of time. Plus, almost 140MB of my RAM is used by my antivirus software in 7.

I tried customizing Windows, but it just makes my PC feel slower then it already is, so I use the classic theme in Windows 7.

Some problems I run across are Windows 7 sometimes fail to start the internet services like DHCP, DNS, etc when the hard drive is very fragmented, or stops booting during logon when AVG is installed.

I notice Windows 7 also randomly wakes up from sleep and hibernate after I do a Windows Update which messes with my Antivirus settings. I have to reinstall my Antivirus after Windows Update in some occassions.

I also hate how Windows 7 uses 20GB of hard drive space since my Hard drive is just a 60GB drive.

I think that there is a smaller chance of getting a virus in Ubuntu or Linux distro is because most good Linux distros come pre-bundled with most software which average users want like Firefox, OpenOffice, FTP client, Bittorrent client, E-mail Client, Instant Messangers, text editors, Gparted, CD burning software, media players and more which are full featured programs which can do most things paid/pirated software can do.

Windows computer from HP, and other brands come with trial programs or crippled versions of MS Office (MS Works), and a lot of unwanted software.

The problem with Windows is you have to download or buy tons of software (MS Office, Nero, PowerDVD, etc), so you can use your computer just to type out an essay for schools, burn cds, annd watch dvds, open a PDF file, etc. Windows Media player isn't very nice to use in my experiences. Many people use the internet to search for free/"pirated" Windows programs like MS Office, and end up at dangerous websites which bundle their free programs with trojans, and spyware with pirated versions of paid software like MS Office. Plus, there might also be fake software which claims to remove unwanted programs which come bundle with a computer for Windows, but in reality the uninstaller is a trojan or virus.

But, with most "Decent" Linux Distro OS, most average users hardly need to download much or any software except for Adobe Falsh player, Shockwave player, Java runtime, VLC, etc to use it as a main computer OS to do basic tasks like check e-mail, watch movies, and go on Youtube.

Oh do I wish flaming was allowed 🙂. Linux does not have as many viruses because it doesn't have a huge part of the market, not because its bad. Think of OSX, has only a few viruses and thats because it doesn't control the market. Think of it like this: If you were a hacker/programmer of malicious items which would you aim for? Something that has a huge amount of the market ( Windows ) or something that has only a small percentage ( Linux/OSX ).

Also, AVG was the bloated Antivirus that I was referring to 😉

Ubuntu is the best open source OS to me. Really great OS!!!

But I thought the same, that win7 is DA BEST, but after few months I HAD to format everything coz of that stupid win7 and here I am, with winXP. Never got any problems with XP!

There is a reason that Linux doesn't have a huge part of the market, It's bad.

No, its because they arn't selling their OS ( well some of them ). They are providing it free and if you dont sell you don't have a budget to buy OEM's to install your OS on their system. Only reason that windows is so popular is because it has enough budget to sell its own copies and pay OEMS to install it on computers :/

I'm a very proud Ubuntu user (though I still use Windows when I have to). You'll be proud if you make the full-time switch. I gotta love how things aren't fast on a Linux distro. It's just the stuff on Windows is ridiculously slow in comparison.

Agreed. Im thinking if I should use crunchbang ( Love openbox ) or go with ubuntu 10.04 :/

 @ the "linux doesn't get viruses because it is bad" wow. That made my day.

Apart from all the arguing - Windows 7 is so much better for multiple reasons. It is far more advanced than any linux distribution I have seen.

Windows 7 Home Premium FTW.

I look at it this way, Windows runs best everywhere, OSX Runs best in the apple store, and Linux runs best in your mother's basement.

Apparently you havn't had to install a file via a terminal. Also, determining how advanced a OS is utterly useless as a windows user will say that Windows is more advanced, a mac user is going to say OSX is more advanced and a linux user is going to say linux is more advanced. Its personal preference.

There is a reason for that Windows is bigger then Linux, end of.
