Ive been a part time linux user for at least 3 years now and I have become very comfortable with the environment. Windows 7 is a OS that you really can't go "wow" about, because sure they do have a fancy taskbar and a wide variety of supported software. The thing is that windows 7 can simply be blown out of the water with a simple gtk theme and some compiz, but that is not the main reason Im switching.
Security: I currently have to run a bloated antivirus just to "feel" safe and there is still no way of being completely sure that Im not infected. Linux does have the ability to get viruses itself, but it has dramatically lower chance.
Open Source: Windows programs are almost completely closed source except the few opensource programs that do support windows. Having the ability of downloading a program knowing that it is completely free and I can almost do anything I want to it gives me extreme joy.
Gaming: I have an xbox360 for gaming, so why would I need the windows back end for gaming? There are also games designed for linux, so if I do get bored; I can always play some of those
Customization: Yes...windows can be customized with programs like rainmeter, windows blinds and themes by other people. Lets face it though, do I really want a program just to change a theme or just to get a fancy effect? Linux comes with almost everything you can desire...simple theme installer, badass interface ( Gnome, xfce, etc ) and you can't forget compiz 😉
Package Manager: Linux has more programs than you can count in one day ( or until you get bored ) and windows has the same. "Why is linux better"..lets see a package manager to find these programs easier while windows programs are one of those things you have to google this, google that.
Transmission: One of my favorite things that windows will never have. If you want to know what it is, google it. ( Supports only Linux and Mac )
These are only some of the reasons that Im switching to linux from windows 7. I will be backing up my laptops copy of windows 7 and leave its drivers partion if I ever wanted to switchback and as the distro goes Ill either be using Ubuntu 10.04 x64 or ubuntu 10.10 x64.
