1) Support ( Depending on Distro )
2) Speed
3) Extremely Customizable
4) Better Hardware Compatibility
5) Windows has boned me before

I own both Windows XP and Windows 7, but I choose to run linux as my OS. How about you?

P.S.
Another reason I use Linux is because the only way I can get 7 back on my netbook is If I pay $50 for an external drive.

It's faster than Windows. Even if I'm on Windows, almost all of my programs are open-source there as well.

1. What you mean those freetards that say go back to microsoft you shill. Or you are doing it wrong. Or other common remarks.

2. Uhmm if you mean ubuntu you must not know what speed is. Compare ubuntu to windows 7 and you will se big differences. Fast linux distros are ones like slackware, gentoo, sabayon, tiny core linux,etc...

3. So is windows lol... I never understood why people think otherwise..

4. Hahahahhah ha ha ... ha Maybe by default, but windows has way more support. Its not due to windows itself, but thanks to microsoft and their deals with people. Really though when sound breaks every upgrade and such I really don't think it matters.. They need to be stable first.. Also make a stable api and abi. Oh and xorg needs to bring in true backwards compatibility..

5. IF by boned you mean messed up. Every os will do this somehow someway... Linux for example likes to have seg faults or kernal panics.. Windows has BSODS Mac has kernal panics aswell.

Im not going to debate with you, but I will respond to some of the dumb remarks you have make and always make.

2) You always assume every uses ubuntu, but actually. My favorite 2 Distros would include Fedora and Linux Mint..Recently I have been using Linux Mint.

3) Windows 7 is only completely customizable if you want to install a crap load of plugins and replace the default Explorer with a themed one and this would also include the shell..While linux, mostly requires you to edit pre installed things like gtk, compiz, etc. ( With the exception of Conky ).

4) As windows has connections. Linux is more widely supported now as well...if you visit any common driver download sites, there is most likely a linux version.

5) They charge for support now, at least in us, and see the P.S.

Linux Mint is ubuntu with some pre packged mint tools. Also note alot of the "big" distros are slow...

Uhmm you do not need to replace explorer.. all you do is run the uxtheme patcher and boom there you go... There are other third party programs also to do the tweaks for you.

?Ha yeah for some for others good luck . case in point brother all in one printers.. I do admit linux is alot better with hardware compared to around 05 though.

5. Yes and so do many others. Want offical novell support you need to pay. Want offical support from redhat you pay. Tell me something I do not know thanks...

My point is linux is no better then other oses. Infact it is worse in some ways. For example what does linux have that you cannot get with other oses. Thats right nothing... Compiz you say well windows has aero, mac has aqua, and freebsd has a compiz.

Those would be reasons I use Linux except for the money issue and the whole windows has boned me before statement 😛

The reason I use Linux is because you need a new computer every damn time microsoft decides to bring out a new version of their OS. Linux has everything I need, it's free and a lot easier to use than some people might think.

Oh and don't even get me started on the register issue on windows. Talking about crap...

Uhmm what? All of my laptops have been able to upgrade to vista and windows 7. You do not need a new computer everytime a new version comes out... Unless you are using an old machine built for windows 2000 and below.

My 3 year old laptop runs incredibly slow under windows 7. I don't like waiting 10 min every time I have to reboot.

3 years old humm why does that make me think it has 1gb ram and a intel card 🙂?

Also you just proved yourself wrong. It runs windows 7 doesn't it 😛 .

See you do not need a new computer every time..

0_o If you want to play it that way, I actually never said it didn't run windows 7. I said you need a new computer without specifying the reason why. It's too slow and just not comfortable to use.

So what if it is a laptop with low specs? I'm not a gamer, I don't need an expensive one. I'd rather use the money for something else. Fact is you can keep using it for a lot longer with linux.

Ah yes,but you did say you need a new computer to run it.. You are just arguing with yourself now. Plus who is saying you have to upgrade? You can stay on xp or vista for as long as you want. sure updates get cut off after time, but that is not forcing you to upgrade. Its the same with linux you can stay with one version for as long as you want.

*sigh*
No, I didn't...

And I'm not going to keep doing this with you. I decided to use linux, because I like a supported linux better than an unsupported windows and it works great for me. Whether or not you approve of my reasons doesn't really matter to me.

I only use Linux for fun, or delete viruses or locked files which Windows can't delete for some unknown reason.

Parted Magic is a great LiveCD distro for partitioning and doing system maintenace on a hard drive.

Linux is good to use for computers with no OS (previous owner took out the hard drive or wiped off the OS) since some Linux distros can run from a bootable flash or LiveCD. Using Linux distros as servers, firewalls, proxy servers since Linux distros are free.

Linux distros are also good for using as a guest computer for guests since you do not have to worry as much that your guests will visit some malware infected website since it is generally harder to get viruses with Linux distros.

However, I find using Windows pretty well for my daily tasks. I mostly just use my Windows computer for E-mail, web browsing, image editing, making HD Youtube videos, homework, and other regular tasks.

As long as you don't install random unsafe software on Windows, use good security practices, don't mess around in the registry, services.msc, or delete random files in the system folders like /Windows /program files , etc. Windows should work fine.

Plus, I'm too used to Windows Live Messenger, MS Office, Windows Start menu, MS paint, Windows Media Player, Windows Live Movie Maker, Windows DVD maker and Notepad.

I don't find much of a real reason to switch to another Linux distro OS to learn how to use Windows equivalent software for Linux.

The main reason I would not use Linux as my primary OS is most distros. I tried like Ubuntu, Mandrake, Fedora, etc lack Multimedia editing features by "default" compared to Windows :Windows Movie Maker and Apple OS X which has iMovie.

Windows had been pretty trouble free for me except for a few Windows Updates, and minor glitches which were caused by me by messing around in the registry too much.

I would actually like to update what I said before 😛 I use a much more popular linux distributor now called Ubuntu 😀
