Hi all

Unfortunately when it comes to adding new features here, one main thing we have to take into account is "Will it be abused?". In terms of the reputation mod, it has been abused by countless members over the years. Although it is not something we really want to do, we are going to have to stop users giving out negative rep. Unfortunately, we are in a situation where we are having to deal with alot of problems daily originating from negative reputation. We have to deal with users giving out negative rep for no reason, we have to deal with some users using it as a way to insult other members or using it as a way to punish any users that disagrees with them. It has caused conflicts between users which has gone onto the forum aswell in the past. We have tried by restricting users who abuse the system but alot of abuse goes unnoticed and the amount of users that use it for revenge rep or insults is from such a broad number of users with new names coming up all the time. It is not practical for us to keep dealing with all these problems, contacting users to find out their reasons for giving the rep, viewing the topic where the rep was given from and working out if it was deserved or not. Sometimes people send us screenshots of PM's, posts and i have even been even sent stuff from other forums to back up their claims that the negative rep was unfair. We do have alot of better things to be doing. In alot of cases, it is down to some users thinking any negative rep they get is abuse. It puts us in a bad situation when a user comes to us about an apparent unfair rep point when we feel it is deserved. We also have some users sending the same abuse reports to multiple admins which additionally causes problems as we have to work out if it has already been dealt with and we can have to or 3 of us looking into it. We also then have to deal with users that are not best pleased with being restricted and will argue with us.

This is not saying it will not ever come back. We are trying to think of a way in which we can allow some users to give rep but we think allowing it to be given out as openly as it has been is not an option and causes alot of extra workload on us which could be time better spent elsewhere. If it does come back then it will be on a very limited scale.

The concept now of the reputation system is still much the same. The higher their "Rep" number is, the more they can be trusted. The lower it is and the closer it is to 0, the more cautious you should be when dealing with the user.

We hope that you understand the reasons why we have done this.

Good updates Fowler, shame to see users abusing the system though. 🙁

Does that mean that you are removing the reputation feature?

It says that in the first post that we are removing the ability to give out -Rep, however +Rep will stay.

Yeah, you can only give out and receive +Rep. -Rep is gone for now.

I personally never give out -1 Reps unless things are really bad.

I think this is a great change though, however, it will be slightly harder to know if you can trust users, because most of the time, people give -1 rep if things don't work out.

Question now - will FP refund any negative reps from the past, or are those set-in-stone?

@ Quacker you just look at how high their rep count is and their testimonials 😉

Here's a suggestion. What if you created a rank of members called elite members or something, and by being granted this rank, the member then has the option to -1 rep people. IF they then abuse their right, demote to normal member and all is well.

Love it. I am sick of people -repping me over incredibly stupid things. I always thought the reputation system should probably be removed, but making this change is just as good.

That is something we are considering but that doesn't solve the issue of users coming to us complaining and shouting abuse everytime they get - rep. It will reduce it though although how it is now will cause less problems.

If you feel they were unfair then they can be over turned. If they were fair then they will stay. It will take far to much work to remove every -rep given previously.

Like I said, just a suggestion. I personally wouldn't give a -1 rep unless someone really aggervated me. And so far, there's been only one person I've considered, but I didn't.

I personally think this is a brilliant idea, -rep's were being abused I must say. I think its turned the reputation mod into a thanks mod though.

But don't you think that users could just as easily abuse the positive rep as well? Overall, I totally agree with removing the negative rep. The same thing has been done on my forum back when we brought the reputation system into the forum, and it definitely is a handy dandy idea.

how about that only + rep can be given by users but if they find someone doing something that deserves negative rep. than they can PM a moderator or report the thread and Mod's and Admin's can give - rep ?

The plus rep will and does get abused although it doesn't cause us anywhere near as much trouble. Never has a user sent us a PM saying a user sent me + rep that i didn't deserve. We occsionally get reports about users giving out rep and doing rep exchanges but that is nothing compared to what we used to deal with.

Lol! That, I can live with, lol.

I understand the reason for this and I think it will solve a lot of hassle. As said above though, in the market place and such places it won't be as easy to determine weather someone is respected in the community and isn't 'dodgy' because the minus rep system isn't there.

Hopefully Itrader mod will be released in the future. As for now, I think it's the right decision 🙂

It shouldn't make a difference. If a user has a low rep then don't trust them as much as a user with 40 rep for example. Bad users will tend to be around 0 - 5.

Well said Fowler, but what about the new people (who start at 0) or people who get +rep for ridiculous reasons like offering ridiculous exchange offers they never pay back?

It is not going to be 100% perfect for picking out the honest members and non honest members. It never was and never will be. In life there is always a risk with everything you do. When doing exchanges, look at their total. If it is low, it doesn't mean they will scam you. If it is high, it doesn't mean it will all go through well.

People shouldn't use the rep as a guide on who to do exchanges with. It is there to just give you a bit more information about the user.
