Restrictions due to virus?

Today for the UK, it's the last school day, no idea how long they are off for. Collages are the same. It's like the world is ending with zombies. But people are so mad and crazy over it

Indonesia here, we're still free to go anywhere, government still not taking serius action

Basically everywhere is locked down here mainly restaurants are open but they have to follow strict guidelines.
It's like a ghost town every time I go outside, it's crazy but also kind of funny when I see how empty the streets are compared to normally.

Currently it looks like everybody is in Chicken Little mode with no thought to long term consequences.

Nobody in power seems to have considered the costs (economic as well as social) of an extended shutdown. Businesses fail, workers lose their jobs and struggle to get back into work because the number of businesses has diminished. Vulnerable people are stuck at home with abusive partners/parents and little option to escape. How many people will start a new business, knowing the government can arbitrarily shut them down at a moment's notice, leaving them unable to pay their bills because they aren't allowed to do any business.

Nobody seems to have considered the endgame. When does it stop, and what (if anything) can be done to stop a resurgence? There's no point opening everything up so businesses can start rehiring if they're going to be shut down with no more than a few hours notice in the future. There's also a question of how long people will tolerate being told to stay home before they've had enough and start going out again regardless.

Our state governor helpfully suggested people wear masks when going out. Great idea, except they are sold out everywhere and the places that have supplies are (reasonably) reserving them for hospitals and the like.

Its now mandatory to wear masks when you go out. Stores are turning people away with out masks. ALL employees now have to wear gloves

Do you think that if we wore masks from the very start that it wouldn't have progressed as far as it has?

There is chance.. I honestly just believe that if the government would have done a lock down from the beginning things would have changed by a lot.

I don't think people would have stood behind a lock down decision that soon and the reason why is that at the very beginning when sports were being canceled and college students sent home people were griping and causing an uproar. We NEED proof to warrant such actions and at the beginning the public was not given adequate proof except hype from the media.

Even now we see that the death tolls aren't as bad as the initial claims so people are wanting lock downs ended. I think in areas where people are spread out that it's a good idea to open their economies.

This what is being rolled out in Tennessee. They’re trying to bring things back to normal. I definitely think it’s too soon.

@Cameron. which parts of phase 1 do you think is too soon?

I'm hoping my state and the surrounding ones open up soon...I had a biopsy that got canceled and there is no rescheduling yet. I would hate for it to be prolonged for too many months 🙁

When it all comes down to it, so many businesses were deemed essential, it probably won't make a huge difference anyways. I just think we're going to have a dramatic increase in cases in mid-May. We'll open so much stuff back up on May 1st, and then by May 15th, we will realize that we messed up. Obviously, we can't hide away forever, but I just don't want us to open back up only to close again a couple weeks later.

I think the longer we stall the opening the more defiant people will become and stop the guidelines of safety all together. If we start opening now then maybe people will continue wearing masks and practice safe social distancing while spending their money at the businesses that are suffering.

My cousin lives in Georgia and owns a hair salon and opened her shop up this week. She's been interviewed on CNN twice now and that's really exciting! I don't even like CNN but this one wasn't Fake News LOL Anyway, she's thought everything through so carefully because her reputation is at stake and she really does care about the safety and well being of her stylists and clients. She wants this to work out and has reached out to her friends and family on Facebook to gather up disinfecting wipes and gloves and whatever else she needs to get that business going.

The longer we keep businesses closed the harder it will be for some to open up and that's devastating to our country. We're already feeling the effects from the meat industry and I'm glad I live in the country where the farmers know how to process their animals to sell us some meat if we need it. I just don't have room in my freezer for an entire cow right now but if I need to go buy a new freezer I think I will 😀

As far as I am aware in Sweden it is more public health recommendations than strict lockdown procedures. The restrictions that are in place include public gatherings being limited to 50 people and banning visitors in care homes. Other than this I feel that the country is really relaxed considering the situation. There appears to be too much trust in the natives for my liking, for them to abide by and respect public health recommendations. However, I feel that some people are not phased or worried by the pandemic perhaps. For example, I see groups gathering in 10s and 15s in parks having picnics, which absolutely terrifies me.

I agree that this is premature. This is way too soon. I would wait at least a week or so after May 1st.

...And, you're right. There would still be idiots coming out, even with the orders being given. The one thing I don't like about outbreaks like this, is because you can't tell who's even telling the truth. Fake news is worse now than it's ever been. I just stick to reliable sources, and even YouTube. Because even though that YouTube censors things, at least we got some content creators trying to cover it.

I do agree with re-opening soon, but not May 1st soon. Maybe like May 15th. Because the summer would already have been here by May 15th or later.

To be fair, and to ease your worries, the amount of coronavirus cases is currently in the chasm, so the cases will taper off, and flatten out.

Weren't we told that we had to initially be on lock down to flatten the curve? So now it's flattened. Businesses are suffering that were forced to close and we need many of them to stay open because there is going to be a trickling effect that isn't showing yet until it's too late. There are many many many areas of our country that should be wide open now. I live in the country but live in an area not far from a city so we're forced to do what the city does...except my life is different from a city dweller so it makes no sense.

Yes, but we're nowhere close to the flattening the curve. The "chasm" I spoke of is when the curve starts to spike or peak. Like it's about to pop.

Where do you live then if your curve isn't flattened? Even Time Magazine has an article stating the US has flattened the curve.

In India, these two months are ordinarily vacations according to our academic calendars. But for colleges and other higher education institutions classes are going on via online. Exams have been postponed. Its possible that the larger part of our academic calendar will stay as it is.

I didn't realize that. Time is a credible source. About as credible as a magazine as it gets. They stick to facts, and none of this headline clickbaity shit.
