I see it being fine that an admin has as many forums as he or she desires so long as he or she can keep up with them all and keep advertising them, posting to them etc.
At one point I was running around 7-8 forums simultaneously. If you have the time and dedication, then running multiple forums is no problem. What's important is time management, and how much time you allocate to each forum. There's only so many hours in a day, so you need to make sure you're not spreading yourself too thin by taking on too many projects at once.
I don't think it's a good idea. It's twice as much work. Even if you have time for it, why not just do twice the work for one forum and make it twice as popular? 🙂
I wouldn't do it, I like to focus on just one. But if other people can manage to work on more than one then it's a good thing for them if they want to do it 🙂
I think it's fine if you know how to stop spam, and have enough mods, admins, promotional staff to help you run and maintain the forum with you, and you are passionate about your forums category, and willing to spend the time on your forum.
Having more than 1 forum is work. I would know. You have to promote and build 2 forums. Find staff for 2 forums. Just way more work. Unless you don't work and have lots of free time.
You really need to manage your time well to even attempt it. It is do-able, for sure, but the time spent is probably not worth it unless you're getting some kind of income from them.
That's what I'm finding in my instance. I am quite organised and as much as I enjoy administrating two forums, the time and effort required is really hurting the other things in my life, especially because I'm not making much money off them. I'm not in it for the money at all, but, y'know, being able to eat is always nice. 😛
It's 100% about the time you have. Nothing more nothing less. Well of course the dedication but that should be a given if you're interested in running multiple forums.
I think it's best to stick to one forum while you are starting out because you have to balance it with our commitments such as School or your job but if you get a steady staff team to keep it active and running then you could always attempt it but I would recommend putting all your time and effort into just one site for starters.
Regarding the second question, these admins do frustrate me a little because you might have spent a good week posting around their forum but to no use because it will shut down the next week. Nowadays I just try and stay away from those sorts of forums and stick to more established forums or forums with Admins who are keen and ready to make a real site, one that won't me shut down come next week.
Do you think it is possible to create a forum and then only have to manage the spam? For ex, it runs by itself and unless someone posts spam or breaks a rule then you don't really have to do much?
Because if that's possible, which IMHO it is, then it would be like all you are doing is posting on 7-8 forums.
I think that it's possible for an admin to run 1-2 sites by themselves. But any more than that and the work load becomes overbearing. I mean there is often a fair bit to do on a site (especially set up and upgrades ). Plus the general posting on one site and all the advertising necessary to promote it really takes a ton of time. So two can really be a hefty workload.
Plus getting additional staff can be extremely hard. Lots of people will say they'll help but then they don't do anything and only end up flaking off. (And having paid staff is just a headache in and of itself... Since just because they're paid doesn't mean they'll do a good job.)
Though if you managed to get a forum large enough where it could self-sustain then you probably could have another forum or two without issue. But getting a forum to be large enough to be self-sustaining is incredibly hard. (Most admins close their sites long before that will ever happen.) And even then there is always more that could be done for that forum.
