Running more than 1 forum?

Honestly, creating a forum and making it self sufficient (from a mgmt point of view) is not that hard.
The only issue is promoting your forum/advertising it.
I mean you don't see Facebook advertising on CNN 😛
So it would take a while to do that for sure.

However, I think that advertising 2 forums that don't require much moderation is very doable.

I am doing it and it's not easy. You need to have a forum that gets most of the attention and then few you're developing slower. It's not easy to develop them too fast, unless you don't have to work and get a lot of time to work on them daily

What do you think about admins who run more than 1 forum at a time? What about admins who drop their forum after a week and just move onto another?

They're equally trivial and worthy of disdain.

On the one hand, if you're just trying to spam your zodknowswhat out in the interwebs to assert your e-dominance in some fashion, you're not doing it for the sake of a community or greater/nobler purpose.

On the other, if you give up so easily after trying, your heart was never in it in the first place, which is similarly shameful.

Coming from experience I wouldn't open more than 2.

I think that this is overgeneralizing. Not every administrator that runs more than one forum is someone trying to gain eFame. Furthermore, plenty of admins with more than one forum have great projects going.

Look at Fergal. He is an administrator here, he runs the successful Businessadviceforum.com and he also owns/runs Generalforum.org

Hmmm ...

At any rate, yes, there are exceptions to the rule, but strictly speaking, the more areas you're invested in, the smaller those fractions of your attention become.

Irregardless, that was my personal view on it; I wouldn't want more than one. I'm sure Fergal's a multitasking wizard of an arcane degree.

That's why I said that 😉 though I think it is a generalization.
Omni:
Mybbcentral
Hackforums
Supportforums

Those are 3 HUGE forums owned by one guy.

Running 2+ forums isnt that demanding if you have people helping you. If you are doing it solo & these forums are fairly active, then all the communities will probably suffer.

I think that as long as you can handle it, then why not? People can do what they want, so they should.

I however ran three forums at once, one time. Each forum wasn't that active, so there was a whole lot of down time where I didn't have to do much.
But, it was too much for me to do once I had a more busy life... so I actually merged them into one super forum.

I hate it when someone makes a forum and then just drops it; I mean it's one thing to have a forum for years and decide to let it go. But I hate it when people give up after a month, or two months... or maybe even a week.
I was a member of a movie forum back in April, they closed the forum after a month.
Later on, I found out that it wasn't their first attempt. The month before, they had another movie forum that they closed down because of inactivity.
I did not understand it at all, if it didn't work the first time, why would you make another one? Plus, if you made it the first time, instead of making a whole new forum.... just open the first one back up!
It made no sense to me at all...

There was also another forum, it was an advertising forum and it was sucessful.
A month later they turned the forum into a zombie forum...

LMAO @ "it was an advertising forum and it was successful.
A month later they turned the forum into a zombie forum..."
I have no idea what those admins were thinking, but that is the stupidest & most drastic move they possibly could have made.

That is so stupid.
Oh well though....

The email they sent to everyone was a bit odd, the funniest part is that the zombie discussion forum is no longer there either!

This is the email they sent.

We are no longer KoinVinteo. We have switched to a Zombie based discussion site.
We have removed all members, even you
Hotspot so please re-register if you want to participate.

They had a link next to "We have removed all members", but that is not important. But the url was basically just called Zombie Discussion. XD

That forum was obviously run very poorly.

How long has Suiko-Kya-Cross been around for?

Yeah, people who hand in the towel so easily and hastily probably shouldn't be running forums.

Well, my forum Suiko-Kya-Cross has been around for about 6 months already and It's actually doing a whole lot better than all three of my previous forums. I'd say merging them was a good idea, it actually beat two of the forums highest post record...XD
