Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

I found a way, that should work, to customize what it says for certain actions in a certain language pack. However, it appears, though the change is being made, not to show up for instance, when I told it to say when an user tried to add himself to the foe list "You cannot add yourself to the foe list? Why would you want to do that anyway...?" but it still says when I tried it "You cannot add yourself to the foe list."

So it's possible my other things like "Your account is already activated silly!" isn't going to show up either.

Not sure why. It should alter it.

Anyway, how do I get more members? At least members that contribute regularly and not just one or two posts?

Anyway, what should I try now?

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

I've made new icons for some of the buttons. Was this a bad idea?

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

I think that my LINK icons are cool and better than before though am wondering if I should change some of the forum symbols (see that one that has a picture that's used a lot on the main page to see what I'm talking about) should be set back to the way it was.

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

i would say practice on your ability to work forums before you begin into the world of promoting you need a real nice clean forum to promote and not something that needs a ton of work before it's ready. it's like building a bike you are putting your bicycle out on the market before you even put the wheels on it. so just wait and practice 🙂

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

Well, I have fixed up a lot.

While I might not be able to totally rid it of the attachment to the silly link I made when I made it, I had tried to make it a Google site, but I now found a free domain and got that.

Do people go for lots of topics (people have told me here that too many may make it look like a desolate forum though.)?

Should I just keep the regular icons that came with this style as they are pretty fine?

However, I must confess that I find my new Report! button, an image of Darth Vader saying "I find your post disturbing!" and choking that one Imperial dude in Episode 4 to be pretty funny, though showing the Death Star exploding, Death Star II I think since it has the Falcon in the background flying away from the explosion, as the icon for deleting a post may look a bit odd.

However, should I advertise all those forums that I am now or should I not advertise the Java Programming Forums (I am a novice (still learning) Java Programmer and they helped me a lot and perhaps I wouldn't have gone into forum making if I hadn't been helped by them and gained an interest in programming and other technical stuff. Stop Forum Spam is helping for lots of Forums. Forum Promotion asked me to have a link if I could to their forum in mine. As for Jedi Council Forums, it's another Star Wars forum.

Also, I might add that I contribute a lot to Java Programming Forums and have nearly 1200 posts, and I have it set right now to show my signature in every single one of them and that signature includes, among other things, a link to my forum.

Also, as you can see, I have a link to it in my signature here on FP too.

So it's not like I haven't tried to promote it on my own.

What else could I do? Many have said I need to do more but won't say what and it kinda gets irritating after a while.<br /><br />-- 31 May 2011, 13:41 --<br /><br />Wish I knew what was wrong with my forum.

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

I fixed a lot of things on my forum. How's it look now?<br /><br />-- 03 Jun 2011, 13:59 --<br /><br />I just got 50 posts on my forum! :cheer: :cheer: Why aren't people coming?

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

Ok, I submitted my site to a directory, but don't know if I can get in (it was a Google directory thingy and I think it's free as they didn't ask for credit card or anything, but how companies can find sneak ways to bill you isn't surprising so much to me anymore, but anyway, even if they let me in, I still have to wait from 2 weeks to a matter of months for it to be listed in the directory.

So I need a more NOW plan.

I fear I'm going to have to resort to desperate measures now:

Jedi Mind Trick: You will join my forum and make lots of (nice) posts.
[End Jedi Mind Trick]

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

Ok, one of my forums now has a Google search bar.

However, it came at the price of having that forum not be able to have a title or logo like the others.

I can't see to get rid of the template image if I use the template that has the Google search bar with it.

Also, I got another member and also now have 57 posts!

As for the main image, that's probably the best I'll get, though several of the templates I'm sure I don't know about and it'll take years (possibly literally considering that I have about 200+ templates to choose from and I can combine the imagestes and stuff for all of them).

Anyway, the main image can be fixed a little later to fix that silverish background around the picture. Didn't realize until I had uploaded it that I had mistakenly cut off some of that when I pasted it in from Paint.

Anyway, the words CANNOT be changed to another color if I keep that style, which is the best style for the main page that I've found so far.

Sometimes I can get the site name at the bottom and top, but when I got that, I also had this annoying logo at the bottom that said "Your Forum" and that's not that hot.

As it is, the style I have for the main one appears to be the best I can get(so far anyway).

Also, nearly all my forums have at least one post in them now.

I should in the very near future compress the group pages into subforums of a forum page so that they take up less space on the main page.

:great:

-- 04 Jun 2011, 20:19 --

Got another forum with a search this forum textbox.

However, the downside of that is that I can't figure out at the moment how to apply it to the entire forum I was trying to apply it to and have only gotten that style applied to one of the subforums of that one.

Anyway, It has a slight glitch in that it was

New Topic and underneath, it has the words, in smaller dark font kinda covered by the first words, Post new Topic, the same words as the tooltip for that button.

But that appears to be the only flaw for that one.

The image looks better there, format wise, than perhaps even the formatting of the main forum image itself.<br /><br />-- 04 Jun 2011, 20:55 --<br /><br />Wish I weren't the only one pretty much posting on this page....

I have fixed the forum a lot.

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

Hey, how's the forum now?

I need to fix a style on it, because although the style looks cool, I found that it's not supported by PHPBB3 anymore and mercifully didn't set that style as the style for my entire board and get locked out of my admin control panel.

-- 06 Jun 2011, 15:20 --

It's growing in members. Should done this post exchange thing a long time ago!!!

Still, most of the members appear to be from FP.

How do I get non-FP members? If I get enough posts, even from FP, will my forum raise up in the search engines?<br /><br />-- 06 Jun 2011, 22:33 --<br /><br />Ok, my forum is down for some odd reason.

It appears that when I changed it, I somehow had a duplicate forum that is older and that has the name fixed. However, it doesn't have all the posts I've lost.

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

Ok, my forum now has a bit more posts but can't seem to get many members outside of FP.

I've tried a few databases, looked for free TLD's (any REAL free ones required like 25 visitors a day, so that's out for now, or something like that).

I've gotten the other thing to open up.

Maybe I should post on that other forum too.

If I get an Admin that does turn on me for some odd reason, I will have a backup forum, not that I can't, since I have messageforums.net as my host get them to fix the current forum for me and out the bad admin(s).

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

Ok, my forum gets some users to come back, but not much.

It now has 20 members and 100 posts.

I posted that in another thread, as I could have sworn that the bumping limit was 24 hours. Last time I got yelled at because I made another thread within minutes after posting in this one. So I waited 24 hours this time and then made another thread by clicking the "New Topic" button on the bottom of this thread and that thread got locked too!

So could somebody please tell me what the actual limit is before I can make a new thread in the Basic Promotion forum?

Also, as a side note, if I had ANOTHER forum that I was promoting, could I promote that one in a separate thread without it being locked?

How do I get more people to come to my forum? I don't know what to offer them.

I'm already offering custom titles to the first 100 regular users and am thinking of letting the first 5 users with 40 posts or more suggest their own forum to make.

Am also offering custom titles to people who catch the most spammers per month, but I don't even have those.

I've tried databases and have gotten in at least 1 and am waiting for the other one.

Also, I can't edit my site code personally, only my host can, so I can't add a Google tracker code, like FP did with their site, nor am I sure if my code will even work as it's Javascript and my forum is supposed to be made of PHPBB3. (However, FP appears to be PHPBB too so I'm not sure how JS works here either.)

I've tried sig and bubble ads but it appears that maybe i can't get both at once as I have enough cash for both yet I only seemed to have one of my threads there answered(the sig ads), though I thought I saw a few forums in both types of ads.

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

If you wish to start a new thread for this forum you must request to get this one removed first by staff.
You are then permitted to bump up that new thread AFTER 24 hours.
Yes you can have 2 basic promotion threads but only if they are for totally separate sites.

You ARE allowed to use as many services as you can afford at one time, I don't think the bubble ads is in operation though right now?

I hope that answers all your questions? 😉

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

It's there at the top of this page.

Also, I had asked to close this thread and open the other one, though now that it's locked, and I've gotten a poster other than me again, maybe I'll keep this one.

I read the rules and sometimes they are pretty vague.

Also, on my forum, if I censor even the word d**n and a$$, will that turn off some people?

I'm trying to keep the forum clean but I'm wondering if, though I may have higher moral standards, if that might turn off potential users.

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

Well, what new promotion should I have on my forum now to get in more users? I'm already offering custom titles to the first like 100 or so regular users.

Or something along those lines anyway.

What else should I try?

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

Contests, giveaways, etc. Just take this site for example.

Forum Promotion does contests all the time.

To improve your website honestly hop on those packages, reviews, featured forum, text ads, etc. services. They will help your website out.

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

What do I give away then?

Also, I am still waiting for them to process another one of the the ads I got.

I have an idea, though it's a risky one. I thought of letting guests post everywhere for like a week or so to see if I get more posts.

However, that does open me up to spam, but as I don't seem to be getting much traffic, spam or otherwise, it seems reasonable.

Ok, Guests can now post on my forum like regular users, though only for a limited time, as doing it indefinitely would likely result in a spam epidemic.

MY FORUM IS ALLOWING GUESTS TO POST NOW! SO PLEASE COME! PLEASE!

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

My forum has a lot of new styles that I'm asking users to view and comment on.

What else could I do? :shake: :shake: :shake: :shake:

I have a ton of smiles and will be getting even more.

So far I have, "Beat dead horse", "Put foot in Mouth", "Exploding Mad", "Hopping Mad", "Faint", "boxing", "Laughing", "Take a chill pill", and lots of others.

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

It looks a ton better now mate 🙂

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

Thanks. :cheer:

I have at least 8 new styles that I made today.

Most of them are in the Style Tester Forum though some have been applied to forums already.

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

I have just applied a new style that looks great. Not sure if the guests can see it though I think they can.

My Black and Blue one was covering up the word titles of categories, though not really that big of a deal.

The best change is that the Logo and word Logo look a bit more professional and in the right spot.
